Etihad A380 with 20 pax on board

Wed May 22, 2019 3:00 pm

How bad can Etihad get ? This is an airline with a very big identity crisis as they seem to be pushing into extremes from top to bottom, going from apartments to no passengers at all.

I assure you Etihad are not flying empty planes around. Probably this flight was cancelled and everyone but 20 rebooked, or it’s a positioning flight for the plane or something. I was on an Air France A380 SIN CDG with about 20 people a few years ago, it doesn’t mean Air France have low load factors.
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

I flew one time IST-DOH on TK A321 and I was the only passenger (Business Class)... the crew told me that the return flight is overbooked... That definitely dont mean that TK have bad load factor...

Don’t forget the cabin maybe empty but the cargo is full. That is where the money is. They import everything from around the world. I was at JFK one evening and I could not believe the amount of cargo being place on a EK A380.

A common misconception that cargo is full / makes all the money. Simply not true. You are not putting much on an A380 as it is regarding cargo. It is possibly the worst plane out there for cargo.

It is very weird that an airline such as EY would serve a meal without a salad and dessert. Their main competitors TK, EK and QR would never do that. Is this part of the cost-cutting going on?
Upcoming flights:
May: AM MEX-CUN 73H (Y), AM CUN-MEX 73W (Y).
August: KL MEX-AMS 74M (J), KQ AMS-NBO 788 (J).

It's probably that it was a full flight until people heard that Etihad don't serve desserts anymore with meals and everyone but 20 decided to cancel their reservations.

If this would be reliably the case ... I would be the first to book Etihad.
And for the balance, I once flew in a completely empty business class section on a BA A380 from LHR to LAX. And as this was only the 3rd business class flight in my life, I did pay upfront the fee to get a window seat :-)

Well, light loads happen but the EY brand has generally suffered over the years. Bad investments and an odd prioritizing of sports sponsorship over decent economy meals just show that something is wrong with their management.

The catering is just sly editing from the vlogger. The truth is that each main meal is larger and desert is served separately (like in business class). To coin a phrase, fake news.

In terms of loads, this happens from time to time. I once flew on an SIA 747-400 from SIN to SYD with just 14 pax on board. The return leg was busy so they didn't cancel my flight, which I was grateful for.

I don’t recall the exact numbers but years ago on the first day of Ramadan I flew Abu Dhabi to Heathrow and there were very few passengers on board a Gulf Air A340. Gulf are still with us, so I guess it was just a quirk of the travelling habits on such a holy day.

BA send empty A380s from LHR to Manila regularly for maintenance. Big deal.

Many airlines send aircraft offshore for maintenance which requires a ferry flight unless it has scheduled flights to that location. :old:

From time to time because of holidays, low season, etc, I have worked flights with less than 50 people but then we were over sold on the return leg. It's all about averages.

Not entirely true. They tend to cycle them through HKG so full flight to HKG, Ferry flight to MNL!

That’s not true. There have been multiple vloggers and trip reporters alike who have shown that the meal is served without a salad or sides.

QF knew they had an empty return charter flight coming up in October, so rather than let it fly mostly empty like the situation described they managed to milk publicity by offering the entire A380 flight up for frequent flyer reward seats.

Fills the plane, burns some points balances and heaps of free media.

I can't believe that EY is willing to serve that crap instead of cutting costs by dropping routes or canceling orders. There is absolutely no need for them to have the network and equipment they do. This will only expedite their demise.

Whilst the A380 still carriers a sizeable amount of freight, the 77W has much more cargo potential for Emirates. One of the reasons they run a dedicated freight service to LHR, despite having 9 daily A380 services between LHR & LGW.

Once got ruled over to a Kuwait A-340 Ord-AMS with 23 on it. No traffic rights on ORD-AMS, mostly full inbound, and on AMS-KWI. Moved everyone to First and Biz. That was a nice ride. And a short walk to the back for an after-dinner smoke.

What bhalex said...we carry very little in the way of cargo on EK 380s.

I have dispatched an A321 with 1 passenger and two pieces of baggage from MUC to DME. I then checked the flight back and it was overbooked. Airline sometimes have to fly this empty flights just to keep rotation and schedule up.

Actually there are more accounts of the lack of dessert and that they are available for purchase...

<sarcasm on>

Airbus should have come up with a quickly convertible A380-800M, with moveable bulkheads so that it can carry cargo the days where pax loads are low.

<sarcasm off>

Only question is... will the upgraded C5 Galaxy’s fly longer than the Airbus A380s.

I think if I were Airbus I would JV with another company to figure out a cargo conversion for these aircraft quickly!
Aesthetically the A 340 got it right!

PS ... the above posters are right ... sometimes airlines do shorter positioning hops, or hops that are high value in terms of cargo, and or average pax yield and are rarely 100% full.

Rightfully so 20 people is light versus a light load of 220 people.
Aesthetically the A 340 got it right!

I saw the food video a few days back and was very surprised for LAX-AUH, that seems like very limited food quantity but i guess they are hoping to push more BoB. EY is also known for running out of food in F even with their super customisable meals.

@the people who are 'tired of vloggers;' who is making you watch their videos?
