The aircraft continued for 90 mins with inop windshield? Way to be safe, China.

Not being familiar with China, how many airports are there along the way that are capable of handling an A380.

For emergency landing?
I’m pretty sure a lot.
For convenient operation probably not that many.

In what way was the windshield 'inop'?

It would have been only the outermost layer that broke. It's obvious the integrity of the windshield was fine because they didn't suffer decompression.

Since there are 3 layers to the windshield only the outer layer shattered. the structural layer didn't and wouldn't unless hit by a howitzer. the lightning strike and Hail inspections? On that Behemoth? Could take a week! since they'll have to walk and mark out Every dent on the upper fuselage and then fix them. There is a machine that can pull the dents , But it's expensive and cumbersome as the work will take getting to both the inside and the outside if the dents are severe. .

In fairness, it did descend 20000 ft, so the air pressure wouldn't have been such a factor at the lower altitude. The nearly 90 minutes to destination after descent though is a bit of a worry, though understandable with the better facilities in Beijing. Got to laugh at the plastic sheeting covering the damage after arrival to prevent further weather damage, it's not like travelling through the skies at a few hundred knots isn't going to increase any further damage after all is it :scratchchin:

There are too many of these in China. I think it was a DL 744 a ways back that had a similar situation (not sure what it’s fate was but I think it sat in China for a long time).

I of course don’t know all the details here, but if this is their inability to divert around due to airspace limitation or slow ATC approval this needs to change.

In what world do you think that would be a write off?

Just an on-going standard a-net joke whenever any airliner receives as much as little scratch....

Or, maybe there are just more hailstorms in China.

Weather varies across the world, and forecasting is not always perfect.

A huge portion of Chinese airspace (I believe it's around 80%) was off-limits to commercial aviation - strictly controlled by the military. That made diversions well-nigh impossible over China.

The last figure I saw said the military now restricts "only" about 70% of the space - but that clearly can still cause a severe headache in situations like this.

TOTALLY Repairable!! It's just that he A380 is so damn BIG! that it might take a few Man hours to find and fix all the damage. The windshield? 6-8 hour fix if that much! It will take longer for the sealant to cure than to replace the windshield.. inspecting, marking, Mapping and measuring the Hail Damage? That's going to take the time!! there can only be so many dents in any given dimension allowed, so those that are too close or too deep will need repairs.. it only matters as to how severe the damage. But it Can be repaired. Make No mistake about that..

Write-off of course. It's an A380, a throw-away airplane no one wants manufactured by those darn French.

Nothing serious. The plane is already scheduled to operate as CZ3108 today.
Just an inspection, replace the windshield and the nose, that's all.

I don't know why so many of Anet-er feel that aviation outside the western world is unsafe,
while it is not rare for a plane that suffered certain damage land after 90 mins,
BA even fly the one engine off 747 over the Atlantic ocean with passengers
which I would definitely feel not comfort then sitting in that 380 with shattered windshield.

BA got lots of flack on A.net for doing that. While you were looking so hard to point out xenophobia, all it really sounds like is unjustified defensiveness.

Considering how much damage the windscreen suffered the crew had no real idea if it was safe to fly 90 minutes or 10 minutes. Just because the choice came out okay doesn't mean the risk was okay to take. Maybe the closest diversion point wouldn't make much difference in time.
Of all the things to worry about... the Wookie has no pants.
