Why No Frontier Canada or Spririt Colombia when there is Easyjet Switzerland and Thai VietJet?

Tue May 28, 2019 12:09 am

Hopefully the title says it all.

In Europe, Asia, and even parts of south America we have a more (or somewhat, sorta) more established name brand operating under a different host company.

SE Asia came to mind first with
Thai VietJet, Thai Air Asia, Indonesia Air Asia
Easyjet Switzerland, All of the Tui brands.

Why have no u.S. carriers tried setting this up, or do they need a treaty to allow it both ways?

Cabotage laws, laws regarding airline ownership and scope clause in various labor contracts all prevent this.

For the US at least, labor contracts are 99% of the reason. I'm sure the US airlines would love to set up a low cost subsidiary somewhere else where they can pay the pilots peanuts but current (and future) labor contracts require any routes by the airline to be flown by union pilots at the contracted pay rates.

Thats not the case for most of these. EasyJet Switzerland probably has higher costs than regular EasyJet. It is about gaining access to Switzerland, which isn't part of the EU. Same for all the Asian LCC subsidiaries.

Frontier’s parent company owns several ULCCs in other countries, so that already exists. And they used to own Spirit.
