1978 vintage 737-200 suffers uncontained engine failure

Thank god that they could return to the airport! I expect this old bird will be written off with damage of such extent. Its one of the oldest 737s still active.

41 years old. First delivered to Frontier in April 1978. Spent most of its life with United. There can't be a lot of these still flying.

I tried looking this aircraft up on Airfleets.net, but nothing comes up for YV502T.

FlightAware shows the flight, but not being a premium member, no registration is available.

FlightRadar24 looked at me like I was high.

What is the actual registration of the plane?

YV502T appears to be the actual registration of the frame

Wow, I saw this plane at Victorville in March 2011 when it was in storage as a United bird.

I never imagined it would fly again, let alone still be in service eight years later. :o

Actual registration is YV502T. Are you sure you searched airfleets correctly?
Looks like Venezolana has 4 more 732's stored, maybe they can take one of the engines of those 4 stored planes and put it into YV502T. The problem will be getting the money (US Currency) to have the work done abroad (POS), fly the engine and repair the minor damage to the fuselage.

There are more 732s out there than you may think. Canada is home to probably at least 1/4 of the world’s remaining active 732 fleet...almost all of them combis.

Does anyone think the engine wasn't run past hours? Rotors have a finite life for good reasons. They can be run 20%+ past life, but not advised nor legal. There is no way to contain a rotor failure, so conservative margins are maintained. Only blades must be contained.

Well the article mentions only minor damage to the fuselage with most of the Debris going downwards. Perhaps if another engine can be found the aircraft may re enter service.

www.globalspotting.wixsite.com records YV-287T and YV-296T as derelict in 2017.

They did park YV-295T and YV-302T in 2018. It is possible that they could take an engine from one of them. However, if it had not been run for over a year not sure if it could simply be transferred across.

Apart from that, there the consequences of it being Venezuelan.

Not looking good.

According to my information YV295T was already wfu and parted-out in 2012, and YV302T also retired back then. There are no photos around showing these planes past 2012. I do not think airfleets is correct with having both wfu in 1/2018. Maybe the registrations were cancelled that late?

There are some days computers let their seething hatred of me show through. I typed it in EXACTLY the way it appeared, and it said, "nothing found". The link, however, opened it right up.

Thank you for fooling the computer system long enough to let me see the link - MUCH appreciated!!

If that is the right aircraft, then we were both back at UAL when it retired. I think I still have a photo of the 737 team "posing" for a picture with it before it left for retirement. UAL 24 737-291s flying before they left service.

Well, good thing it's in the Caribbean. Plenty of cigars available for purchase.
