DAL (Delta) 2173 (A320) LGA-FLL engine failure divert ORF

Mon Jun 03, 2019 1:51 am

Some of my friends were on this flight. They heard a loud bang. Captain advised engine failure. Dumped fuel *way east* and then diverted to ORF.

Not really sure about dumping fuel, as far as I know, the A320 has no fuel dump capability.

Happy for a good outcome. However, the 320 can’t dump fuel unless there was a fuel leak along with the loud bang.

Strange and interesting. I suggested to them that they must have dumped fuel (because of the weird route), and they agreed that it was what they were told. Power of suggestion, I guess...

Looks like the flight was already out over the ocean as part of the planned route, and the diverted pretty much straight to ORF.

Yep. Audio can be heard on LiveATC ZNY ATL86/ZDC SIE54 #1 0000-0030Z at 4:54

Once they got on the ground, it was fortuitous that ORF ended up being the closest airport (suggested by ZDC) because it happened that there was an ATL-ORF 739 that was due to land not much later, and was apparently an R.O.N. So they were able to load them up pretty quickly onto that plane that operated as 2173 ORF-FLL. Looks like they loaded up a flight plan for DAL9963 to reposition back to ORF at 0210ET, but it has been canceled for some reason. Maybe crew rest. They obviously couldn't use the A320 crew, so I assume they used the inbound 737 crew to go on to FLL.

Looks like they swapped a/c on the AM ORF-ATL flight 1252, today operating as an A320, as opposed to a 739. I guess they isolated the issue.

And 2748 FLL-LGA operating as a 739 instead of A320.
