Spirit About To Announce Sarasota?

So this website exists and mentions LAS/IAH/DFW/BWI-SRQ routes. Is this a new page they're setting up for a new city announcement?

NK is most likely announcing BNA tomorrow as well.

This rumor I have been hearing since January! Last time I thought it was going to pop was in February but it ended up being Allegiant announcing more flights.

Finally I can’t wait and hope this is real!

I finally had a flight on Spirit out of Tampa a month ago and it wasn’t bad. Definitely would fly them again. But now why another DC area flight???? Why not Chicago!!!!

Oddly, digging through the spirit site shows San Antonio, Grand Rapids and Toluca as city options in addition to Sarasota. No mention of Nashville though. Have they ever serves any of these cities before?

Interesting. Where do you see these cities listed? I can’t find them on Spirits site. Toluca was served from about 2011 to 2015ish From FLL, DFW, and maybe IAH but not too sure about that last one. SAT was served from 2007-2008, maybe 2009 from FLL. GRR was never served by Spirit as far as I can recall.

The cities were showing up on this page. Other than these 4 new cities, all others listed are accurate as to what is served so maybe they've got something a little bigger planned

Yep, there they are. Very interesting. GRR, SAT, SRQ I can see, they are fairly logical adds and consistent with Spirits strategy of late. TLC is the oddball to me. As far as I know, Spirit pulled out in 2015, maybe 2016 because of poor performance. I would be very surprised to see them attempt Toluca again so relatively soon after dropping it. There were some rumors about Spirit trying to obtain MEX slots. Maybe this attempt was fruitless and they are giving TLC another go.

Spirit typically makes its new route announcements on Tuesday (or if a phased announcement, they start on tues and proceed through the week), so I imagine the story will at least start to unfold tomorrow.

If those are the real markets I’m sure the airport is crazy happy. All are really risky except BWI IMHO. I would not expect some of those to survive.

I have to wonder if this is some sort of ploy and those are not the real markets. LAS is super-oddd.

I’m guessing if it’s true, Chicago would be added as well. It would definitely be a winner for them.

Looks like BNA is certain. Showing as a bookable city on Spirits site.

my only surprise is that NK isn’t starting SRQ with a northeastern city or two. SRQ is a great little airport that i’ll gladly pay a few bucks extra for in order to avoid TPA.

LAS seems to be the "go-to" station of most of NK's new station announcements, but there does seem to be a market for that route as mentioned upthread. Can't speak to IAH or BWI, but there's a daily AA regional to SRQ and at least 7x/daily AA mainline on DFW-TPA, for what that's worth. That said, DFW seems to be an important station for NK for them to consider adding SRQ in addition to their existing TPA service.

Meanwhile, NK will be adding the following routes from BNA on 10 October: BWI, FLL, LAS, MCO and MSY.
2019: DAL, MCI, PHX, LAS, DFW, SAT, ORD, SLC, SEA, DTW, PHL, MIA, LAX; B73G (WN x3), B738 (WN, AA, DL), A20N (NK), MD83 (AA), B788 (AA x2), CS1 (DL), B739 (DL), B712 (DL), B752 (AA), B763 (AA), B77W (AA), B789 (AA)

I checked back on Spirit.com and noticed that too, while Nashville is under upcoming nonstop destinations. So what gives? Will Sarasota be announced at another date and it was just making sure that the website info looks good when SRQ will be launched? No news from SRQ airport about any announcements tomorrow, while reading in the Nashville thread they will have an announcement tomorrow.

That's possible. It sounds like BNA was already in the works and SRQ might be a future announcement. I guess they're not quite ready to look into LAL as an option over SRQ just yet, but I'd suspect something might happen in the coming weeks.

Spirit erroneously wrote Memphis on their Facebook page, it’s now been corrected to Nashville so ignore my earlier post.

A lot of leisure travelers are going to regard BNA-SRQ as drivable. That's got to depress avg fares.

Yikes- that’s a little embarrassing. When Sacramento was announced, I believe the press release had the city code as SAC (Sacramento’s GA airport), instead of SMF (the air carrier airport).

Spirit served SAT from IIRC late 2007 to early 2009 from FLL. Internal rumor at the time was that SAT was to be Spirits 2nd international gateway with flights all around the country connecting to flights south of the border. Then came the 2008 oil price spike and subsequent recession. I did the round trip and had maybe had 25-30 pax each direction, hence the route being pulled after a relatively short stint.

A different, much larger and better networked Spirit exists nowadays. A return to SAT is a matter of when, not if. The likely routes would be any mix of TPA, MCO, FLL, MSY, BWI, ORD, DTW, LAX, LAS following Spirits pattern of late.

Following their latest additions itll be BWI, MCO, FLL, TPA, MSY, & LAS. They seemed to have shifted their network focus away from ORD, DTW, & LAX.
