UA & LH Capacity from EWR

Despite JFK being nearly 1.5x EWR on an international scale, EWR still has a large European presence. UA covers this market pretty well with many points on their map. But still there are many cities that are way to small for Transatlantic flights. This is why a lot of traffic is directed through FRA via UA or LH. In comparison, DL, KLM and AF cover the connections much better from JFK. Together they offer 12 flights to CDG and AMS. UA and LH only offer 4 flights from EWR to FRA and MUC. With the load factors below, do you think it would make sense for UA and LH to add more summer capacity from EWR?

One thing to keep in mind is that UA is also sending passengers through Zurich, Brussels, and Vienna for connections so you should take those factors into account.

To be honest a few years after the merger I wondered why LH/UA only had 2x daily EWR-FRA-EWR, especially seeing during IATA summers both IAD and ORD are 4x daily and SFO is 3x daily. But then you have to take JFK into account because both these airports serve the same New York Metropolitan area. I'm not sure what yields look like on these routes and what effect an additional EWR-FRA frequency would have on yields. But what we have seen since the merger is UA upguage EWR-FRA from a 762, to a 763, 764, 77E, 77W and it seems like they are finally going to settle on the 78X. So capacity has been added during the summer season however I think we are still a few years away from seen 2x daily EWR-FRA on UA.

Also I would like to see UA add more routes from EWR to secondary markets in Germany and Europe as a whole and I would like to see UA's EWR-MUC upguaged to a 78X for IATA summer 2020 and a 77E for the winter season.

Also remember the SQ flight JFK-FRA. It dumps ~500 seats on an A380 daily on the route, completely blowing up O&D yields. Whereas NYC is a flagship, high yielding route for AF/KL/DL, it is a loss leader for LH/UA from FRA.

Also, it may not help shuttle UA traffic, but UA code-shares on the LH JFK Flights, right, that adds 1x MUC and 2x FRA to the equation

Load factors don't directly speak to profitability.

UA's coverage from EWR to secondary Europe is really pretty good. Add *A partner non-stops, too. https://www.united.com/web/en-US/conten ... -maps.aspx

Remember, also, the great EWR-to-IAD shift for many smaller markets for connectivity, which allows EWR to focus more on O&D.

Lufthansa even tried STR-EWR, trying to connect Stuttgart with the EWR hub, and it failed. And that was with Star Alliance carriers to a Star Alliance hub. There just aren't the passenger yields they needed to make it work.

And there's always IAD, ORD, IAH, DEN, SFO, and LAX to route connecting passengers through to Germany as well...

As noted above, UA/LH TATL traffic is a bit more dispersed than DL/AF/KL. *A JV has many more hubs in Europe, along with YYZ/YUL going to other mid-size markets in Europe (BOD, OTP, PRG, etc.). You can even consider LHR a *A transit point given how many non-JV *A airlines fly there as well (LO, TP, OU, A3, etc.). DL/AF/KL are pretty much confined to JFK/AMS/CDG.
