TAP and the A340

Thu Jun 06, 2019 3:24 pm

I had thought that TAP had stopped flying the A340, especially with the A330Neo now entering service. However, on checking a flight on their website, for late July, I see that they have one flying from LHR to LIS. Is this correct?

When are they planning to retire them?

They'll be around till the end of this year, mostly on the MPM & LAD flights with the occasional LHR as you mention.

I believe they will still be around until 2020. Mostly dedicated to African routes (Angola and Mozambique) and Northeast Brazil.

They have a pretty decent Economy cabin. Business is horrible though.

According to routes online, the last A340-300 is schedule for the 31st Dec 2019.

I’ve spotted the A340 and A330 on LHR multiple times in recent months
A330 also a regular at VIE.

Basically TAP is keeping the A343 until the end of 2019 as a precaution in case they have some issue with the A339. The 4 aircraft were delivered in 1994 and all have more than 100.000 hours, they have been great machines :airplane:

Do they schedule the A343 into LHR or just upguage when needs be? Can't find any LHR A343 flights in the system.

Not sure how common this is, but it's really an engineering marvel that aircraft (regardless of manufacturer) can, and will continue to have lives like this.

I would love to see the TAP A343 back at EWR one last time. But we do at least have the shiny new A339 to console us. ;)

I think TAP’s A340s don’t have the “license” to operate in the US anymore.

Does anyone know how to elaborate this? Could it be noise driven?

I think it's because TAP A343 don't have Controller Pilot Data Link Comumications - CPDLC installed.

I think it's a matter of time... Someday a TAP A339 will go to LHR its just a matter of having enough planes on the fleet

What are you talking about?
TP 343s are regular to Brazil almost on a daily basis swapping between GIG, REC, FOR and SSA and sometimes even BSB and GRU.

That is true that they are regulars to Brazil but these days only to GIG and REC. They have slowly been replaced on the Brazil routes as more A339's arrive. For example, In Brazil in the past 10 days only GIG and REC have seen an A340.
