Whay do the many 747-4xx number variations mean

Sat Jun 08, 2019 8:04 am

Looking through flightradar24 and I've noticed that there's loads of different 747-400 variations:

747-428
747-4H6
747-412
747-446
747-430
747-436
....
....
....

What do the variations mean?

They are customer codes
Like 747-436, 36 is Boeing’s Customer code for British Airways
747-437, 37 for Air India
747-438, 38 for Qantas
747-428, 28 for Air France
747-4H6, H6 for Malaysian Airlines
747-412, 12 for Singapore Airlines

They show who originally ordered the Aircraft

Boeing customer codes.

Not just specific to the 747.

Including the 777 and all prior 7x7 series aircraft, excluding the 747-8, 787, 737Max, and 777X which will/do not have customer codes.

Why have Boeing stopped using Customer Codes?

Because they want to be BORING.

I’m not sure really. Although 787-9 looks cleaner than 787-900.

Paperwork. Each variant with a different customer code would have to be added into the type certificate data sheet, so much simpler to just drop it altogether.

Plus they were starting to run out of options, with every BBJ having it's own Customer code, they'd gone through the Numbers 01-99, had started with letters, and were a long way through the Alphabet already.

As others have said they are customer codes that stick with the aircraft for it's entire lifetime. They show who originally ordered the aircraft. Not OPERATED but ORDERED. i.e. an aircraft ordered by Malaysian but never taken up by them and sold right away to Lufthansa would not have been delivered with a customer code of 30 but with a customer code of H6.

Per Wikipedia:

"In 2016, Boeing announced that they would no longer apply customer codes to any aircraft produced after a certain point, which would lead to their designators being the "generic" type for the model. The codes were removed from the type certificates for each model with effect from the production line number shown below:

Boeing 737 Next Generation: line number 6082
Boeing P-8 Poseidon: line number 6020
Boeing 747-8: line number 1534
Boeing 767: line number 1102
Boeing 777: line number 1422

Further, customer codes have never been used for the 787 and 737 MAX, and will not be applied to the 777X either"

I disagree. The older versions look cleaner.
