AA Expanding DFW, LAX?

Sat Jun 08, 2019 10:36 pm

Looking at FlightConnections today, surprised at the number of missing markets from AA at DFW and LAX: https://www.flightconnections.com/route ... irlines-aa.

Notable gaps in their network:
DFW-EUG
DFW-MFR
DFW-RDM
DFW-LGB
LAX-MRY
LAX-YUM
LAX-SBP
LAX-BOI
LAX-GEG
LAX-YYC
LAX-MSO
LAX-BZN
LAX-BIL
LAX-FLG
LAX-SAF
LAX-EGE
LAX-MTJ
LAX-GJT
LAX-RAP
LAX-MCI
LAX-MSP
LAX-MKE
LAX-DTW
LAX-CVG
LAX-PIT

Seems they're losing out on a lot of TPAC feed by lacking these routes.

Keep in mind, AA also has a PHX hub that serves all of these.

There are other holes in the AA network not on the above list such as DFW-CAK, DFW-ALB, DFW-ABE, DFW-CHO, DFW-FNT, DFW-LAN, DFW-PWM, DFW-PVD, DFW-ROC, DFW-SYR, LAX-CLE, and LAX-MEM.

So, these airport pairs are 'missing' on the basis of what? PDEWs? Absence of competition?

Even with the size of AA, DL. UA, and WN, and they are very large, they all have holes in their networks.

When you say "notable gaps," these make sense:

This. Otherwise, were just running a loop of airports on the other end.

PVD-DFW would seem like a no-brainer but AA feels differently.

I know a few of those the OP mentioned have already been tried and dropped, like LAX-BOI/MCI/MSP/PIT.

AA already operates a seasonal LAX-FLG.

DFW-LGB has been done before. I think LAX-SAF has too. pmAA has served EUG, but I don’t recall if it was DFW or ORD.

Yeah I'm also surprised AA hasn't started LAX-MEM.

I was going to college in Eugene from 1994-1998, AA flew into EUG with twice daily service, that didn't change during the few years they served Mahlon Sweet. They first entered the market with a 727-100 routed DFW-PDX-EUG & the second flight was routed ORD-PDX-EUG & the returns done in the same manner. Both flights quickly transitioned to the M80 as PDX & SEA were some of the few AA M80 cities, IIRC.

Although the Greyhound bus left from campus & was non-stop to Portland & it did cost a couple of bucks less, If I could get a ride to the airport, I flew AA each time I could, for a whopping $20 each way. My good friend M'lissa Ives, daughter of Victor Ives, who in Portland was Sinister Cinema & he was a loved local celebrity took his money & bought a radio station that was the top 100 pop stuff & we had free QX passes, as QX would trade free flights for advertising on KMJK radio 106.7. Other than out of state kids, I flew home more than anybody I knew, do laundry, eat good food & go home on late Sunday evening.

Eugene was on the destination map in 1986 - http://www.departedflights.com/AA110186.html

Sure...... ya know, OTHER than being completely different markets, with different financial dynamics, different business demand, different leisure component demand, different distances/performance metrics, and different, well, everything.
I myself, suspect a more prosaic motive... ~Thranduil

Still waiting for a resumption in LAX-DAY service (former Piedmont route).

Any substantial LAX expansion by AA is very unlikely until around the time MSC opens in late 2020.

DFW is an abysmal hub as is. Sitting here for over two hours so far in an a321 after a typical baggage cart collision. All flights to Denver over booked today. American is a disastrous airline for customers, especially in DFW.
