Vietnam Airlines Moscow Airport changes

Mon Jun 10, 2019 11:41 am

Seems like Vietnam airlines needs to partner with Aeroflot https://www.vietnamairlines.com/en/site ... vo-Airport, also wondering when they will resume flying between Moscow and Ho Chi Minh any time in the future?

There is no pressure to partner so there is no must but it makes sense, as they can offer a lot of connecting flights via SU which are beneficial.

I don't see how SVO is a rational transfer point for many popular SGN-originating or SGN-bound O&D pairs. I imagine most SkyTeam loyal passengers would rather connect at CDG or ICN.

SVO is a more rational transit point to many middle-east destinations than CDG or ICN, but I'm not sure how much O&D there is between Vietnam and the Middle East and SVO is still a huge backtrack. I imagine that SkyTeam is comfortable ceding this traffic or sending it over KUL.

In addition, SU already flies SVO-SGN. A VN flight would probably be way too much capacity.

Interesting that it is SU flying non-stop from Moscow to Ho Chi Minh City, but it is Vietnam Airlines flying Hanoi to Moscow. Looks like the business demand is from Russia but government traffic is from Vietnam...

As far as offering onward connections from DME or SVO, one can do a lot of these "connection" cities via DXB and/or DOH already, Would SU or VN get trash yields trying to convince passengers to bypass DXB and try DME or SVO?

SU flies to HAN daily and SGN twice weekly. VN flies to Moscow thrice weekly. The demand is mostly VFR for that matter.

Vietnam is becoming a bigger tourist destination for Russians... not surprised.

Over KUL? Could you please explain?

Sorry, for some reason I thought that Malaysia Airlines is in Skyteam when it is not. Nevermind the bit on KUL.

Here's another doozy - Vietnam Airlines apparently has a codeshare agreement with Etihad. However, EY doesn't fly to Vietnam and VN doesn't fly to AUH. I'm sure that agreement is super-useful ;)

That is nothing strange at all. You didn't mention what city pairs are included, but exactly because those destinations aren't connected is a good reason to funnel passengers through a common gateway, maybe BKK or SIN.

VN has been in a JV with AF since 2017. This JV also offers VN passengers with connection to AF network throughout Europe. AF is currently flying CDG-SGN sector 3x weekly and VN is also flying 3x weekly from SGN. VN is also flying daily to CDG from HAN as well.

I took advantage of this earlier this year to fly MEL-SGN-CDG on one ticket using both VN A359 (MEL-SGN) and AF 77W (SGN-CDG). Keep in mind that you can only choose this option when buying tickets through VN.

A very natural choice given their SkyTeam membership. I wonder why it took them so long for this move when every other SkyTeam carrier had relocated to SVO - Were the fees at DME attractively low?

especially as VN is making the Hanoi Moscow flight a red eye which is probably more attractive for connections
