Man arrested at Schiphol with loaded gun

Tue Jun 11, 2019 2:48 pm

SCHIPHOL - A 35-year-old American was picked up at Schiphol on Monday with a weapon. Security personnel discovered the firearm with a cartridge holder with ammunition in his hand luggage at the security scan. The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee then took action, securing the backpack and arresting the man.

He is still in jail and will be brought before the examining magistrate on Wednesday, reports the Marechaussee on Facebook on Tuesday. It is not yet clear why the man had the weapon.

Did this American took his weapon with him from America and if so, where was the security at that end, or did he obtain it in the Netherlands, which is quite hard to do. What was he thinking, what was his intentions? Stupid move from his side, a sure way to get arrested and put in jail.
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!

I agree it's stupid to try and take a gun through security but I think you might be kidding yourself if you think its hard to get hold of a gun anywhere in the world, those of us who don't wish to get one don't see those places but I know of places where they can be picked up if you know the right people with the right connections.

If (when) it's determined that this troglodyte managed to bring his shootin' iron through TSA screeners on the US side, heads need to roll. TSA has only proven themselves adept at finding nail clippers and mouthwash, but utterly useless otherwise.

Was he transiting, originating, or terminating his trip in Amsterdam?

It says it was discovered at a security scan. Thus he must have been originating in Amsterdam or transiting and originating from a country other than an EU-member, the USA, Canada or Singapore.

A loaded gun is found on people almost every single week at Pittsburgh airport alone. Sadly, this is not news in the USA.

He didn't come from the USA as then he didn't have to go through the security check. Much more likely he came from a country with lax security and was transferring to the USA.

That might be true, but why would an American buy a gun in Europe. They can be bought cheaply and without much effort in the USA. In NL they are not easy to obtain and definately not cheap. My money is on the TSA having failed on his outbound (USA-NL) flight, not on him having bought a weapon in Europe.

I wouldn't assume it was in his carry-on leaving the USA; he could have easily had it in his checked baggage, if he indeed brought it from America.

And there was the chap at Gatwick last week who went bounding through security brandishing two large knives shouting that he was going to massacre people. 50,000 volts said otherwise

I don't know the law in NL, but in France, an American in vacation couldn't buy a legal gun. There is lots of paperwork and a background check, the first item being having a French address, and having been a member of a shooting club for 6 months.

Of course he could buy an illegal gun, even an AK47, but then you would only do that if you intended to do harm, so trying to go through airport security doesn't seem like much of a plan.

Stupidly carrying it from the US, possibly in the hold, then very stupidly trying to carry it back, seem much more likely.

Rules are just as strict in the Netherlands. The possession of a gun without a license is illegal and could get you in jail, and licenses are very hard to come by. We also run a background check and there are a lot of things that can get your application denied. Of course there's a black market, but it's hard to get access to it.

I assume he's one of those Americans who doesn't feel safe without a gun for self-defense and carries it everywhere he goes. He should have thought before going to Europe. In most European countries including the Netherlands you don't need a gun for self-defense, it's safe enough to go without. In fact, nobody carries a gun so that's what makes it safe. When applying for a gun license they always ask for a reason why you need a gun, and if you give self-defense or anything similar as a reason your application is guaranteed to be denied.

The caught criminal was part of the entourage of an American rapper (Jason Derulo). Probably gonna spend about 3 months in jail, he's lucky that the jails in The Netherlands are comfier than those in the US.

Maybe he checked it leaving the US, and when he was packing to return he shoved it in his carry on without thinking.
When wasn't America great?

Still stupid, he travels to another country, with different rules. Certainly, an American doesn't hold a license to own a gun in the Netherlands.

Please stick to discussing the topic. Don't turn this thread into a gun debate. Those discussions can be had in the Non Aviation Forum.

Agreed. You go to another country, you are bound by their laws. It's that simple.

Hopefully the complete story will emerge in several weeks. If indeed he got on thru a security checkpoint the images are kept for some time for a review. If he was part of an entourage for a popular singer, was there a chance they flew on a private jet to get there and commercial home?
