Very little reason for them to bring it back. And the title of this is deceptive.
I myself, suspect a more prosaic motive... ~Thranduil

I don't see it happening. The demand for travel to Iceland has peaked, and a lot of it was fueled by competition between Icelandair and Wow Air. With WOW no longer in business and a potential siphon to AA's TATL business, DFW-KEF is a nice to have but not a necessary one. The yields are likely to be trash, the 757 can be used elsewhere.

With the retirements of the 757 fleet and decreased competition/demand, any chance this could be moved to one of the east coast hubs and flown by an A321neo?

PHL seems most obvious, but I suppose JFK, ORD, and CLT are options also.

An XLR really isn't needed for PHL-KEF.

I don't think AA even saw it as nice to have. It was just a competitive response to the Icelandic carriers.

It was definitely launched to defend turn in DFW, but hopefully it sticks around to summer-seasonal. If AA continues to serve diverse destinations like BLQ, TXL, PRG, and DBV I see them keeping KEF around as long as it makes even a few dollars.

The 75Ls (the international config 757) do not have a retirement date at this time.

It seems there are really 4 options, in order of most likely: continues summer seasonal from DFW only, cancelled, moves to PHL, additional flight from PHL.
717, 733, 734, 738, 744, 752, 763, 772, 77W, 789, A319, A320, A321, A332, A333, MD88, CRJ, CR7, CR9, DH1, DH2, DH3, S340, ER4, E170, E175, E190/CO, NW, US, AC, NH, AA, UA, DL, WN, WS, SK, VY, LA, QF, AR, AV.

Right, but most people seem to indicate that Icelandic tourism has peaked. We went too and enjoyed it, but it's definitely one of those places we don't need to go back to. That's part of what AA will consider - there are folks that go to Italy or France every year. Iceland isn't like that as far as I know.

We need to examine yields and load factors of course to see if this is true or not. I’m sure AA knows more than we do. Although KEF would make more sense from PHL. I don’t know how many people from the southwest/Texas are interested in flying to KEF.

I went 11 times, enjoyed every moment. Iceland is unique. It's magic. I know many people who are hooked and have gone many times.

I don't expect them to return for 2020 and would be (pleasantly) surprised if they did.

Do the aviation enthusiasts on here remember other routes with such a dramatic history? From zero carriers to three and then (probably) back to zero in such a short span of time?

A good amount of passengers are probably connecting to KEF at DFW. If AA has loyal flyers, people from other hubs and cities along the east could backtrack if necessary.

Otherwise, if there was a PHL-KEF flight, it would connect people west of PHL.

It seems like this has become a very popular question to ask. It keeps coming up every couple of months. Spot checking these next few days flight looks very busy, which of course does not necessarily paint a complete picture of the flight performance. This flight is heavily dependent on connections ex DFW, like many other flights at hub airports. It is a popular destination for Americans, a summer seasonal out of a very large hub is doable.

Not saying it isn't unique - it is. But 11 times? Wow you are one of a kind.

The OP asked exactly the same question last years

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1405175

Does anyone know for sure that it’s not coming back or is that all speculation?

We just got back last week. Iceland is a very unique place and absolutely beautiful. I could see going one more time (2nd time total) and drive around the ring road, but after that, no need to go back.

On the other hand, we've been to France and Italy multiple time and will likely continue to keep going.
Whatever

I confess, 5 or 6 times was when I was young and Reykjavík had the biggest night club in Europe. And arguably the most beautiful women. And no doubt the most drunk men. So, all you needed to do was stay sober enough to stay on your feet and...well, I guess you got it....

Speculation, season just restarted last week. Nothing has been mentioned regarding next years summer ops.
