Did the a380 plus get any orders, and if not, why?

Thu Jun 13, 2019 1:32 am

Hey guys,

It seemed the a380 plus offered some upgrades over the traditional 380. Did it receive any orders, and if not, why not? Did the winglets create gate space problems?

Not sure exactly on other orders, but the 3 NH A380s are A380plus with the rear conventional staircase instead of the circular staircase.

The a380 plus was never built.

Even though many believe something such as winglets are trivial to build/install, they’re not. Airbus would have to find multiple suppliers willing to take on all the items, and those suppliers would need to invest millions worth of tooling, training, personnel, and tons of engineering changes and all else - doesn’t sound like much of a business case for any company to take that on for an aircraft that had horribly low orders being placed.

I believe that RR did not want to play along with doing a major PIP to the engines. - one issue
the plus probably would have cost 1 to 2B to develop, say 1B expensed over 100 planes, an added $ 10M per plane.
No airline wanted to sign the contracts - so it died.

Ok then the NH A380s just incorporated the straight aft stairs from the A380plus concept.

Regarding the rear staircase redesign....someone got screwed on that. Either Airbus took their lumps doing all the engineering and only selling 3 copies of it, or ANA paid dearly for it. I wonder which it was. Any guesses?

The A380+ was never actually launched tho, was it?

So how could it ever have had any orders? It was only a developmental study as per Airbus media/press news.

It wasn't launched and had no industrial implications. The frame displayed was fitted with winglets mock up.

It was supposed to be launched if 2 customers ordered it. The only potential prospect was British Airways but they didn't take it.

The plus was a standbye branding for different upgrades they had in the pipeline. Wingtips, PIP, cabin enablers and such.
ANA took the small crew backstairs option that had become available. The plus never took of.

Maybe because no one proved to be real enthusiastic about ELEVEN ABREAST ECONOMY SEATING, with the outboard (window) seats elevated above the rest in the row??
The whole thing was hogwash. Lipstick on a bacon.
I always questioned the wisdom of offering MORE seats on the airplane; with so many airlines configuring their A380 with surprisingly few seats to begin with, removing the differentiating features of the aircraft in the name of cramming in more seats made little sense.
Clearly, airlines agreed.

Elements of the Plus may turn up in EK refurbishments, and in the unlikely event of EK underwriting an engine replacement, perhaps the Plus and more.

Don't see an engine change happening.
Airbus has terminated accepting new orders for the A380. However they will continue to service all airplanes over their lifetime. That might include more updates from the plus pipeline.

The only major thing EK was really interested in from the plus were the winglets. I don’t know if Airbus refused retrofitting because they were desperate and trying to force new orders or if the proposed winglets were only really feasible with the wing/MTOW changes (we don’t really know how much engineering Airbus had actually devoted to the winglets before the mock-up either).
