SAS announces first Airbus A350-900 routes

Thu Jun 13, 2019 2:24 pm

This seems to be worthy of its own thread. Announced today by SAS:

First route: ORD on 28/01/2020. Other routes announced: PEK, EWR, NRT, PVG, HKG and SFO (not necessarily in that order)
Configuration: 40 SAS Business / 32 SAS Plus / 228 SAS Go
First aircraft: SE-RSA "Ingegerd Viking"

It appears the aircraft will initially be based at CPH. Between delivery and the first long haul flight it will be used within Scandinavia for crew training flights. No news as to whether a new or updated cabin product will be introduced other than being "equipped with unique SAS features, carefully developed from feedback given from travellers. SAS will announce these new features during 2019."

The full press release can be found here: https://www.sasgroup.net/en/sas-announc ... -features/

From January 2020, travelers can look forward to exploring the world in the most fuel-efficient and comfortable long haul aircraft, the Airbus A350. The new aircraft is a key investment and part of the extensive renewal of the SAS fleet, tailored to reduce emissions, and in line with the Scandinavian outlook on travel.

SAS travelers can soon experience the world’s most modern and fuel-efficient long-haul aircraft. On January 28, 2020, the first of eight new SAS Airbus A350 will officially enter into long-haul service between Copenhagen and Chicago, one of the most popular SAS routes. The A350 will be based at the SAS hub at Copenhagen Airport and will operate on seven routes during the first year, including Chicago, Beijing, New York, Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong and San Francisco.

Should have started new routes on 29/01/2020. That way they could say taking a new Leap forward with the A350...

Same Business product as the current A340/A330 fleet?

Yes, you're sharp eyed! Blue engines and a single pixel row left of the flags.

It does doesn't it? I didn't notice it until you mentioned it - I like the new strip of national colours. I guess they'll reveal the livery on another aircraft type first - I remember back to 1998 when they revealed the current scheme. My aunt worked for SAS at TRD and she was flown down to FBU for a top-secret preview of the new livery (on an MD80) and the new staff uniforms. It was all very hush-hush.

I reckon it's time for a livery refresh for SK. I'm excited to see how it looks!

Indeed it is. the current one is not exactly turning heads, to say the least.

It certainly looks like an updated livery at least. Interesting.

Whatever livery they come up with will be an improvement. I hope they do the A350 proud, and not another Lufthansa style change.

But I can see it now: Extend the blue down from the tail, drop the red from the engines, but make a little square of red by the L2 door with "Welcome aboard" in three languages.

Does their choice in picking which routes receive this new plane signal these routes are the most important and/or profitable routes in their system?

No, it's done for scheduling purposes. ORD & PEK can be flown with only 2 aircrafts. Once 4 aircraft have been deliveried they will start doing the longer sectors. SFO/NRT/HKG/PVG requires more than 2 aircraft to do it on a daily schedule.

SAS Needs a new livery. In my opinion it's the worst out there.

It's ok - of its time. I'm also excited to see if they will update their interiors - they only did this relatively recently so I guess the livery change will be modest in order to match these. Seems a waste to change the entire corporate image when they have spent millions on updating aircraft seating etc.

I'm excited what will the new interior be. I personally love the cabin interiors on there A330/A340. Wonder if there going to refresh it or introduce a complete new cabin concept?

A bit surprised that BOS isn’t first as that’s a same day cycle.

I'm surprised they aren't adding YYZ from ARN or OSL, AC covers CPH but still, SA should consider adding some Canadian destinations with them being part of *A. I'm certain the A321LR is for YYZ!

Finally! I’m so looking forward to try the SAS A350. I believe they will upgrade the cabin product as well, right?
Does anyone know if these frames are to swap both the A340 and A330 at CPH or just the A340? Would be nice to see some A330 be transferred to ARN and used to open new routes (like ARN-NRT :) ).

BOS is summer seasonal only. But ORD, IAD, EWR and PEK are also same day cycles. Even MIA even though it's only winter seasonal

I wouldn't be surprised if SAS uses at least one of the A321LRs for ARN-YYZ or OSL-YYZ. SAS could certainly use better connections to Canada.

Agreed, YYZ or Canada in general is very underserved from Scandinavia. AC doesn't plan on adding ARN or OSL anytime soon as all their long range aircrafts are being used on other routes. SA can help to cover the unserved routes of ARN-YYZ or OSL-YYZ and help pax connect on AC routes to domestic Canada and transborder USA that way these future routes can be profitable.

Given SAS have only 3 A321LR on order, I can envision the 3rd (at least summer seasonal) being for YUL-CPH. Now that YUL-VIE is launched, SAS' hubs are about the only *A hubs in Europe that YUL still isn't connected to...plus WAW.

Thank god they mention service to Canada with the A321LR!!! Also yes YUL-CPH is more likely for the 3rd A321LR while the other two could be for YYZ-ARN or YYZ-OSL with the last one being for a destination in the middle east or India.

There are many potential destinations, but maybe that should be discussed in another thread?

Absolutely not. The current livery is classic and instantly recognizable. SAS did a great livery change twenty years ago. Today these colours are still going strong.

The SAS A340 is still on my wish to fly list, preferable on the NRT or SFO route. When may we expect these cities to be served by A350 aircraft?

According to another forum, the first A350 will be used between OSL, ARN and CPH in November and December.
