Updated: SAS presenting new livery

Thu Jun 13, 2019 4:12 pm

Looks like SAS could be releasing a new livery with the A350! Looks like blue engines and updated flag. Image

Sorry should have made that clear in the post. It's from the SAS A350 press release (https://www.sasgroup.net/en/sas-announc ... -features/)

I haven't heard or seen anything about that, but I think it'll look good. I think that engine cowlings painted in blue will be nicer than currently painted in red. Looking forward to see it.

The image looks like it hints at an all-blue or black fuselage, which could look pretty cool. I always welcome new ideas for a livery, so that prospect excites me. However, no text on that page hinted at a new scheme for the fleet, and it almost seemed like that A350 image was inserted at the end as a sort of "stock" photo. It'll be interesting to see if anything develops in the next several months or so.

Really hope not. Their current is fine. This trend of replacing nice and fresh livery with new ones (which are, most of the time, too white or low budget) is really tiring to see. If SAS will come up with a new livery, I can only hope it will be as good as their current.
I wonder when people will understand:
Embraer 190 or simply E190, not ERJ-190. E-Jets are NOT ERJs!
Boeing 747-8, not Boeing 747-800. Same goes for 787.
Airbus A320, not Airbus 320.
Airbii does not exist.

It’s possible it could be a stock photo, but I think the flags on the nose are a dead giveaway and the blue seems to be the current SAS blue. Also if you look really closely I think there is an S in orange near the front of the inner right engine. Does anyone know when delivery is scheduled for? Or final assembly? I know first flight is scheduled for first month of 2020 so maybe early Q4 given it’s a new fleet type for them. Much harder to keep a new livery secret if on a new production model, might come out earlier on an a320neo but who knows. The tail during final assembly should give us a good hint though.

Please, not another boring, dull, monochrome, navy blue livery ala Lufthansa.

I for one really love their current livery, highly distinguishable and quite classy.

Hope it’ll only be a light tweak over it.

I believe it was just a generic PR photo, and nothing to do about any livery.

The only thing dated about the current livery is the font ( excluding the logo ) which was very used in the early 2000's.

I don't think it's a stock photo as there's the Star Alliance logo between the cockpit windows and the forward doors. The delivery is late November 2019 and before the first long haul flight, it will operate some training flights in Scandinavia. However when SAS announced their A350 order a few years ago, they teased the idea of an A350 in a retro livery however SAS have never had blue engines before

In January standby.dk had an interview with the SAS Deputy where he was asked about a potential new livery.

The quote in Danish:
"Vi arbejder hele tiden på at forny os og at være i front i branchen. Om der kommer nyt design eller bemaling, kan jeg ikke sige noget konkret om på nuværende tidspunkt, men mon ikke der snart kommer noget på den front.”

Roughly translated he said: "We are constantly working on renewing ourselves and to be leaders in the industry. Whether there will be a new design or livery, is not something I can currently comment on, but I wonder if we won't see something on that front soon."

The last phrase is awkward to translate but it basically means that we can likely expect something soon.

It's clearly not a generic PR picture.
It has the star alliance logo and Scandinavian flags colors on the nose.

We see the engine reflection on the nose too.

As mentioned by someone else, there seems to be a S in orange/red on the engine.

So from this picture I'd say:
grey fuselage
blue tail and blue engines with possibly SAS in the red-orange tone currently used on the engines.

But this photo (link posted already in the A350 produlction & delivery thread) shows the current livery IMHO - with red engines...

They are definitely blue.

I disagree about red/orange lettering being on the engines though. I think it is reflection of a light. You don’t see red on the engines reflected on the fuselage.

I agree with the lettering. I do not think they are red.

Is the flag styling on the nose new as well?

Didn't mean to be a debby downer here, but is it possible that the blue-ish fuselage is just the effect from the dark nature of the "photo set"?

Yes, I don’t think the fuselage is blue, the contrast between the engine blue and the fuselage is very very different. Fuselage is likely grey like the current livery.

Definitely looks like a new livery or at least a special, the engines are quite clearly blue and the fuselage is either dark blue, black or grey.

SAS has already seen a minor rebrand of sorts back in 2016 which saw it focus more on various shades of blue and a very similar aesthetic to Finnair with bold lettering blue on clean backgrounds.

https://www.itsnicethat.com/news/scandi ... old-121216

Maybe a new livery will take inspiration from the 70th birthday livery, blue gradients and larger titles.

If there is a new livery planned, it seems like there will not be any major changes. At least not to the tail. https://twitter.com/gandtea/status/1143766471430066176

This is the firm that SAS used for their brand refresh last year, Bold. The same company designed the 70th anniversary livery. It is unlikely that SAS would sign a contract with a new firm after the successful brand refresh last year, so I'm inclined to think we will see something from Bold along the lines of the anniversary livery that it designed, using blue gradients on the fuselage and engines and leaving the logo unchanged. The emergency red colour used on the engine cowlings today isn't used on any other SAS product and I'm sure Bold would want it gone from the livery. I also suspect that the blue, dawnlike setting of the A350 press release picture is a clever way of hiding any changes in colour to the fuselage; it's really difficult to tell if it's white, grey or blue.

"Bjørnpilot" on Instagram has a new photo of the coming SAS A350-900 at the paint shop. So far it looks like the same tail and wingtips as the old livery. No picture of the engines yet.

The current livery is boring. The tail won't change but i hope they will stop this ugly orange and this sad grey. Maybe add some yellow in it. I would love to see the flags

SAS current livery is one of my favorites.

I love how low profile the lettering of “Scandinavian Airlines” is on the fuselage. With a minimalist deep blue tail design with red on the engine housing.
I took these (not professional at all) photos as I saw the aircraft taxi after landing in HKG.

I agree. It's understated and minimalist. The SAS logo on the deep blue tail is timeless.

Maybe a refresh is in order, but I hope they don't go the way of Lufthansa and United by making it more monotone. I like the red contrasting engines.

All the new ground equipment that SAS Ground Handling has revived the past year or so has not been warm-red, so I guess we will say good bye to the red.

Looking through this page though, every SAS plane still had the red engines. I hope they keep the red, there's plenty of blue in the sky already. Just my :twocents:

SAS has shared some pictures of the A350 winglets on twitter: https://twitter.com/SAS/status/1163129719556136961

If there is a new livery, it won't be too different.

Looks like there won't be much of a difference if any then! Not that SAS really needed a new livery anyway imo.

I was hoping to see much more of their medium blue color, that had traditonally been used on uniforms and signage. It looks incredibly fresh. Pantone 2995C

Come on SAS!

Judging from the pics of the A350 tail, a revamp of the livery is 100%, but exactly what, remains to be seen.

The only change I would make is to make the engines fully red, not half red. SAS's livery is for the most part perfectly fine.

It was SAS themselves that released the picture when they announced the schedule for their first A350 longhaul service. The title was "Get ready for our new viking". There's also the Star Alliance logo by the doors, so it's not just "any airline"

Yes there is. The engines are blue and the design of the three Scandinavian flags on the nose is different. The Chief Operating Officer & Deputy Chief Executive Office of SAS, Lars Sandahl Sørensen, have also teased about a new livery being announced when the first A350 arrives

The colour of the engines can be a bit hard to identify due to the light in the image. But if you zoom in, you will notice that the three flags look very different to the current livery. So unless SAS is trolling us, there will be some kind of updated livery.

The current SAS livery is probably the most boring one out there.

It was SAS themselves that released the picture when they announced the schedule for their first A350 longhaul service. The title was "Get ready for our new viking". There's also the Star Alliance logo by the doors, so it's not just "any airline"
