Argentina and Uruguay power outage - impact on aviation

Sun Jun 16, 2019 11:44 am

This has just come up on Sky News, up to 48M affected apparently, across the two countries.

Is this affecting arrivals/departures? Perhaps the larger international airports have backup.

AEP and EZE are operating as normal thanks to generators.

That’s good news. I wonder how long they run for? It sounds as though all of Argentina lost all power. Quite an unusual situation really, how long to fix it will be interesting.

All of Argentina and Uruguay, parts of Paraguay and Brazil without power.

How the heck did that happen?

WOW this is definitely suspicious! I'm glad the airports have generators.

So it looks like every other airport is grounded? I’m not seeing any operations out of them on planefinder/flightradar24.

It looks like there are certainly operations, but hard to get any accurate info on ops stn EZE. FR24 does show movements in and out, but as said above, it’s unlikely to be fixed quickly. How long before it begins to affect ops is the question.

The only arriving flight into EZE this AM that is showing a significant IROP is UA979 from EWR, running 12 hours late, new ETA is 9:12 PM (was scheduled to arrive at 9:50 AM) due to crew scheduling issues.

You can check real time arrival and departures at most of Argentina's airports here: http://www.aa2000.com.ar

Norwegian is running with some cancellations and delays today. not related to the power outage. One of its 737s, LV-ITK, suffered a bird strike at COR yesterday. The plane will be ferried today to AEP and should be back in service by end of the day.

the generators are diesel, so they´ll run until running out of fuel.
