Former D-ALCM has been ferried to SAT yesterday, not flying higher than 27,050 ft.

Is it normal for ferry flights to stay at that level?.

Flightaware is showing another scheduled flight from VCV to SAT for later today. This will probably be D-ALCN positioning into SAT. Oddly today it's under a UPS flight number.

Depending on headwinds, it's normal for even revenue flights to stay that low.

However per Flightradar, it was flight N742BC.

I'm aware both were sold to UPS as it was mentioned earlier in the thread. I thought it was odd that both aircraft showed UPS fights scheduled in Flightaware and FR24 but both ended up flying under their Boeing tail numbers.

I highly doubt that. If they were using them for parts they would've left them at VCV. No need to waste money on flight crews and fuel to fly them to SAT.

Is there a seat for a Flight Engineer where the panel used to be on the MD-11?

Worth noting that the two ex-LH MD-11s UPS is taking are the last two MD-11s built. LH still has four more of similar vintage (and some older ones too). Will UPS take any more of the late builds?

Together with two older Fedex freighters this makes three MD-11 retirements to Victorville in one week.

Funny how once again they didn't land right away. They overflew the runway at about 2700ft and 138kts before doing a sharp left turn and climbing to 4200ft and now they are again on final to VCV after another sharp left turn.

Lufthansa apparently is expediting the retirement of all MD11s. According to an exclusive report at aero.de, all MD11s could by withdrawn from service by June 2020. This is earlier than expected. Latest by end of 2020 all of them will be gone for sure. Reasons are the same as ever: declining cargo business and due to the Corona-outbreak it gets even worse.

It's not really surprising. It was known they wouldn't replace each MD-11s with a 777, and if you add to that the two factors they cite, along the upcoming of two 777s in June and July, you get such result. Even Atlas Air has parked several less-fuel efficient aircraft.

One has to wonder how long FedEx and UPS will keep these MD's. I suspect they are getting them for cheap, are in top shape, have limited hours/cycles, have enough pilots for them, just right for certain routes, as well as fuel cheap now. LH has likely ran out the depreciation on them. I suspect maybe 5-6 years from now they might be retired as mx and fuel costs go up and similar sized 2 engines wide-bodies get retired that can be converted to freighters.

I think FedEx still operates some MD-10s from the 1970s. So why not fly the MD-11s into their forties?

I just took the time to check on Flightradar24 which of the seven remaining are still operated and it appears that D-ALCH has not flown in at least seven days.

That's because D-ALCH is the next to go to VCV. It is currently undergoing it's phase out checks/removals and will fly to the desert soon.

Thought so, but since seven were mentioned earlier it was interesting to check if they are still all flying.

Since the begining of this thread the following have been retired and sent ot VCV:

D-ALCE - 08/08/2019
D-ALCM - 10/28/2019
D-ALCN - 11/26/2019
D-ALCF - 12/17/2019

Currently all retirements are going smoothly according to the pre-corona plan. Original plan was to go into Q4 with the 4 frames in the new paint scheme (D-ALCA,B,C,D), internal rumor was that D-ALCC would be the last frame to retire. But since there are plans to speed this up, I assume that D-ALCI and D-ALCK could retire within Q2 and the other four could leave together as a batch in Summer. Just my 2 cents, there are no news on this topic currently!

I'm not surprised. The subfleet is now too small to pay for the costs of keeping the type. A shame as I always liked the MD-11.

I presume the MD-11s have been sold off to one of the current operators?

All of the ones retired in 2019 & 2020 have went to FedEx or UPS. It's safe bet the remaining aircraft will go FedEx or UPS too.

UPS picked up two of the ex Lufthansa birds recently. Hard time for LH to be shedding cargo capacity. Hopefully they can get the new 777s online quickly to capture the overwhelming freight market.

It's really not surprising with the ongoing switch to 777F and the probable return of belly capacity on regular passenger flights.

According to CARGO FORWARDER GLOBAL (don't know if this is a credible source) LH is considering keeping the remaining MD-11F's longer than December 31st, 2020. For how long is unclear. Reason is an expected shortage of main deck cargo capacity, especially once COVID-19 vaccines are available.

I know how long they will keep the MD11Fs. They will keep flying them as long as passenger planes are not flying and the shortage of belly cargo space continues. Many airlines (including LH) now project that international travel demand will not return to 2019 level until 2024. That means the number of passenger flights and cargo space from those flights will be depressed to a point that additional cargo flights are needed to make up the difference for at least a few years. So it's probably safe to assume the MD11s will be operating until end of 2022, or even mid-2023.

They are now the lifeline of LH.

Why wouldn't they? Why would anyone phase out freighter planes when there is a lot of demand for cargo at the moment?
Airlines are ripping the seats out of their passenger planes to haul cargo.

I think they keep them flying untill they need some major maintenance or when passenger planes start flying again and they can start hauling cargo on passenger planes again.

I would guess that absence of free cash flow has caused them to take another look.

Is LH expecting any more new 777F other than the 2 new 777F expected in September and October 2020. If so, their arrival could drive the retirement or sale of more of the MD-11.
