FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Seasonal cuts for PHX/ORD-YVR I'm assuming? Looks like ORD-YYC is going year round?

AA DFW-GUA DEC 1.2>1.5[1.2] FEB 1.1>1.6[1.1] MAR 1.3>2[1.3] APR 1.1>2[1.1]

I think this is the first time AA does DFW-GUA more than 9 weekly.

Wow if I'm reading this right F9 is definitely expanding TTN. I hope all goes well for them.

Ouch, I've never seen MCO less than daily, I'm kinda surprised this route isn't doing better considering the flight is always packed

Thanks enilria!

Regarding the B6 DCA slots: my understanding is that they still have the same amount of slots. Perhaps not everything has been loaded yet, but I believe we should expect to see the following:

DCA-BDL/TPA/JAX/CHS are cut (all were run 2x)
DCA-BOS goes from 10x to 15x
DCA-FLL/PBI/RSW all pick up 1x (total of 6x to FLL and 2x each to PBI/RSW)
DCA-MCO stays at 5x
DCA-SJU stays at 1x

DCA essentially becomes a large outstation with competitive schedules to the focus cities and PBI/RSW, where B6 has large operations as well.

Interesting to see both MCO-BOG/SYR get cut while MCO-BUF goes to 2x. Sure seems they aren’t waiting long to make changes after Marty’s departure last week.

So, they had loaded the BOS-DCA increase before they had the slots to fly it?

Big cut on the FLL-TPA route by WN. Is that MAX related? I wouldn’t think so but who knows.

Most of the cuts at FLL are due to the runway construction going on. Most airlines have reduced schedules but it should ramp up once it's completed.

It seems that AS could consolidate to 1 gate at DAL and leave one for DL.

So looks like UA is pretty much done with service to India come August. I guess AI or LH will now be the Star Alliance choices.

They have already pulled out of both routes due to Pakistan and Iran air space - as of now, they plan to return to both routes Sep 1. Of course, that's pending the political environment.

Thanks
So, they had loaded the BOS-DCA increase before they had the slots to fly it?

BOS-DCA was announced to go to 14x sometime last month in return for cutting BDL/TPA. This was in conjunction with a slew of other BOS increases. Then this past week it seems they also decided to cut JAX/CHS in return for more BOS/FLL/PBI/RSW. So it seems like with Marty’s departure, they are really doubling down on defending BOS/FLL and strengthening their position in South Florida in general.

From the DCA-based flyer's perspective, B6's cuts are really disappointing. AA goes back to having a monopoly on many secondary-city routes. How many frequencies to BOS, MCO, and FLL does one airport really need?

Looks like B6 is just taking the plane used for SYR-MCO and giving it to BUF to do double daily BUF-MCO. The flight times and lengths are essentially the same.

The MCO-SYR cut on B6 is especially disappointing. Allegiant must be killing their yields with SFB/PIE-SYR.

Finally, some changes at AS. Heavy on Florida this winter - is this their highest service level yet on PDX/SEA-MCO/TPA?

Yep. Altho it appears that PDX and SEA (according to this thread anyway) are still up in the air as far as what happens to DAL in Nov... But SAN & SJC are indeed gone as of Nov and SFO & LAX seem to be reduced so, yeah, DAL appears to be, let's say not prospering for AS! Time for me to analyze the Nov AS skeds again and see what else turns up.

Temporary suspension only due to issues with Pakistani & Iranian airspace en route. United plans to return to India on Sept. 1st.

JAX-RDU has some history. IINM AA kept it around for a long time post-dehubbing. I think it was cut around the same time as BDL-RDU around 2009 or 2010.

Could it be simply a seasonal reduction (for the winter, non-peak) season? Maybe it's better that AS spreads those flights out to reduce delays. IMHO, I wouldn't panic unless AS doesn't re-expand those flights next Spring/Summer.

I'm just glad to see AS adding to their existing routes instead of going crazy on new destinations. I don't think we'll see a whole lot of expansion from AS until the N-concourse is complete...at least out of SEA. But I could be wrong.

I have to correct myself. SEA and PDX to DAL might very well be staying with what is already published for Nov onward - that is roughly 4x daily for SEA and 3x daily for PDX.

Sorry Enilria, I forgot. I'm just glad I corrected myself before you had to! ;)

If the political situation in the region stabilizes, UA will restart the EWR-DEL and EWR-BOM flights. They have no competition in the market on nonstops (AI is a Star Alliance member and not likely anyone's first choice) and these are long standing routes that are highly profitable.

I thought about that, given that the reductions are across the board. But I’d assume that DAL is very business heavy and is O/D, with no connections on the DAL end. In other words, it isn’t like AA to DFW where you would expect a lot of seasonal vacation traffic.

By my count, it looks like DAL service, after October, is perhaps being reduced by ~7 daily flights: 3 from SJC. 2 from SAN and 1 each from LAX and SFO. (Assuming SEA and PDX remain unchanged.)

That sure sounds like service at Love Field on AS is essentially being drastically cut , even down to one gate's worth of flying as of November? The question is: permanently or temporarily?

AA should've codeshared with CX and JL on their ORD/PHX-YVR routes, this could've helped increase pax on those flights.

Here come the AA transcon cuts at JFK!

DCA BOS 15 daily on a LCC is a ludicrous waste of slots.

They likely won’t have a gate to expand them by then. I don’t see how they won’t lose access with that schedule.

I have to correct myself. SEA and PDX to DAL might very well be staying with what is already published for Nov onward - that is roughly 4x daily for SEA and 3x daily for PDX.

Sorry Enilria, I forgot. I'm just glad I corrected myself before you had to! ;)

Well I think you are right. DAL is up in the air. Even with some stuff continuing they may well just shut it. They need to do a deal to sell the gate access to DL. I asked that AS fan guy to post proof they can’t do that. I don’t think he did or I didn’t see it.

How can you have shuttle service without flying at least once an hour during the day? 15 daily is anything but a waste of slots. If JetBlue is currently trying to rebuild and achieve higher profitability, they need to cut unprofitable routes and use those slots to add on to routes that make them money. Adding more frequently to a high profile business route makes them way more competitive to travelers that need that flexibility to fly any hour of the day. Now that Delta, who is trying to expand and take the spot as the number one carrier at Boston, is starting 6x daily DCA-BOS in September, JetBlue needs to do whatever it takes to keep those important business travelers with them.

Edit: A word.

DAL-SEA reduces to 3 daily and DAL-PDX reduces to 2 daily- all on E175 aircraft.

DL had JFK-BOM in 2006 or 2009 not sure exactly when it operated, but it did (EWR-DEL/BOM was already established several years prior) and DL pulled the route. It was flown on a 77L. UA is a very established player in this market.

While I greatly enjoy reading these weekly posts, I don’t think you’ve created a special position for yourself where such condescending attitude is justified.

It is not possible to post proof that AS’ sublease with AA prohibits them from “selling” a gate(s) at DAL. However, logic would indicate that you can’t sell or dispose of something that you do not own.

What is a possible outcome is that AS simply wishes to cut its losses and terminate a sublease on one gate. Normally, the head lessee would not allow this since it eliminates their source of income. In this situation, AA may permit or encourage it since there is an opportunity to lease to DL.

When? I just checked the AS skeds from Nov thru Jan and they (currently) show SEA at 4x daily and PDX with 3x daily, all on EMJs. Those counts plus LA and SF at 3x each equals 13 flights at DAL from November on.

(I apologize if I confused you airplaneboy; I meant 'assuming SEA and PDX remain unchanged' from what the skeds currently show from Nov on. I've been posting on a few different threads about this and perhaps didn't make myself clear. Does that help?)

I don't think the DCA changes are fully loaded yet. It's also possible something is in the works with their DCA slots. I'm hoping they trade it for LGA or JFK slots, but that's probably crazy dreams.

Not surprised they shifted PUJ capacity to MBJ given the recent issues there. I don't get the sense everything is loaded yet. LRM is supposed to be cut entirely with its capacity shifted to PUJ.

they are just so weak on this route. What do you achieve by been 1x on this kind of route for most of the year.

I can't see them leaving this market. It was multiple daily at points. Maybe the Canadian traffic has just plummeted with the weak Canadian dollar. Rouge has 763s on this route. I know it was the case a few years back and probably still is, but Canadians are the 3rd largest group of homeowners in AZ after Californians.

I am not surprised about AA dropping JFK-SEA nonstop service since DL has hubs at both JFK and SEA. In addition to a FF base that is loyal to DL in both the NYC and SEA markets, DL also has some connecting feed from New England, Eastern Canada, Europe, and Africa to support JFK-SEA nonstop service on DL.

Shocker, more anti-UA rhetoric from Enilria, so lame. UA has much stronger flow via EWR than DL does out of JFK.
