RIP SDV (Sde Dov, Israel)

Mon Jul 01, 2019 4:29 am

no further last minute stays of execution from the government. at 2359 local last night SDV bit the dust after over 80 years of service.
last Israir flight to ETM departed 2350.
this on the heels of ETH closure.

the ETH-SDV route was the lifeline for Eilat citizens especially patients travelling to central Israel for medical treatments
among them chemotherapy. sometimes 5 times a week.
a downtown to close to downtown route.

(additionally, as per posts here several months ago SDV was also being used for short hop international flights eg LCA.)

now these souls/patients from Eilat have to endure the trip to ETM and even worse the trip from TLV to downtown which adds appreciably to the travel time. (can even come close to doubling the travel time OW).
and as of yet while there are ways to get from Eilat to ETM and TLV to downtown they are not very efficient or user friendly.

some reports have the tel aviv to Eilat air traffic down by close to 30% after ETH closure and before SDV closure.
which puts more cars on the very dangerous arava road the main road to Eilat. (every few days to weeks fatal accident)

all this because of the real estate moguls who control the land on which SDV sits.

this would be akin to closing LCY (everyone go to LHR) or LGA (everyone go to JFK) for purposes of real estate development.

ah progress!!!
RIP SDV and ETH

Crying shame, I did over 300 flights with Arkia in the old DH7 and ATR72, and fondly remember both

I think losing LGA for real estate wouldn’t be a bad thing.

I only flew there once, from Eilat to Sde Dov. An Israir ATR-42, formerly Continental Express. Fun flight, and Sde Dov was far far easier to use than the fortress of Ben Gurion.

I often road my bike past the airport when on layover in TLV. Always enjoyed the small airport charm. I didn’t know about the medical purpose related to Eilat. That’s terrible news. Real estate always seems to win.

It's not real estate that wins.... it's money that wins

More like economic reality and comparing SDV to LCY or LGA is ignorant. Keeping the airport open for one route several times daily was madness anyway.

while the main route was SDV ETH or ETM it was certainly more than several times daily but somewhat less than an hourly shuttle.
also per viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1407751&hilit=SDV there were LCA and maybe other flights as well.

in the "old days" you could get to ETH less (often much less) than an hour before flight time (literally walk off the street) - then be at SDV in 50 minutes and in downtown maybe 30 minutes later
now - over an hour to get and check into ETM
same 50 or more minutes flight (more traffic at TLV) and then sometimes over an hour to get downtown from TLV.

if I was a medical patient (and alas Eilat does not have a high level hospital. even the hyperbaric chamber for diving incidents closed years ago. so almost anything more than earwax or reflux has to go to tel aviv) I would be major bummed.

Given the lack of a rail link to Eilat, and the move from ETH to ETM, this move essentially cuts it off for convenient travel. Eilat has never been a decent tourist attraction and now this dump is also hard to get to.
2 things are endless: ignorance and space

What a pity!

I was there in 2012 and took some pictures. I was impressed by the fact that the landing aircraft fly so close to the tower of that factory or power plant.

PS.: one main reason to go there was actually to see AIT Aviation’s SH360 in ex-Air Seychelles colours…

Too bad. It seemed fun and I kinda wanted to experience the approach once. Shame the small convenient airports always close down.

Great pics I went spotting there once on one of my trips to Tel Aviv.

OK, the E-195 makes sense maybe, those were used at SDV, so they may need a few less. Can't see ow A330 has anything to do with this closure though.
