Aeromexico cancels MEX-GYE and reduces frequencies to UIO

Wed Jul 10, 2019 1:15 am

Effective Oct. 2nd, AM will no longer fly the MEX-GYE route, and will reduce frequencies on the MEX-UIO, from the current up to 12x w, to just 7x w. The airline mentions operational reasons due to fleet availability. Both operated with the 738.

Without the MAX available and the corresponding shortage in capacity, it'd appear the airline is letting go of the less than stellar performers.

Nice, meanwhile we have AA applying for DFW-GYE/UIO on a 738.

GYE was a New route so no time to consolidate. Demanda is There. Interjet has already filed for this route.

I guess all of those $780 business MQD runs from JFK to UIO hurt their yields.

There's many ways that MEX isn't DFW, for good and bad. If you think there's relevance please detail it.

I’m a bit puzzled, what does MEX have to do with DFW? I mean AM offers connections to the US, but I am sure this was not the main driver for a GYE flight. Additionally, I do not think AA’s main target for these flights is pax going to Mexico.

Probably a result of the MAX fiasco? Airlines that had counted on having the MAX are now short planes.

One can get demand from the most obscure city pairs. The question then becomes, is it profitable demand? Just because an airline can put people on planes' seats does not mean they will make money doing so.

The 737-MAX's continued grounding and its postponed restart has affected its planned schedules throughout the year. This is something the CEO had warned may happen if the problems with the plane would not be fixed soon. Similar to what other carriers are going through. Other recently started routes have also been canceled including Liberia and Belize as the airline has had to substitute many of its AM Connect aircraft on its domestic runs. Cali which is due to start soon is also being switched to an Embraer Connect aircraft.

Fully agree. But here it's different. Airlines weren't counting on MAX to be out of service for about a year at this point. If they are short on planes that can fly the MAX routes they will prioritize routes that make the most money. GYE was a new route so it makes sense load factors weren't all that great as it needed consolidation.

Mexico removed Visa requirements for Ecuadorians last year. That's the key driver for demand. Interjet will be operating It too. I don't see what would be about GYE that wouldn't make it a money maker.

Well I'm surprised they're not postponing the launch of MEX-CLO (Cali, Colombia) which starts in less than a week, 4x weekly on 737, and has a similar somewhat shorter stage length than MEX-GYE. It's a shame they had to cancel GYE and downgrade UIO but they'll surely be back to the original schedule once the MAXs are flying again.

I've read reports that CLO would be downgraded to Aeromexico Connect service on E190 until things are back to normal. That's within the E190 range but GYE is too far

They applied for E190 service (don't know if it already got approved) but it is currently scheduled as 73G.
