Atlanta Mayor OK's Smoking Ban at ATL

Wed Jul 10, 2019 10:44 pm

I get political correctness, but a percentage of travelers are going to smoke. PERIOD.
Designated smoking area outside, BEFORE security.
As I recall, they tried this once before decade and a half ago, and it was a bit of a disaster. The extra 5-8,000 heads a day through security caused delays and missed connections, and employees reverted to smoking all over the place, instead of the designated areas.

Why do they go kneejerk reaction, instead of thinking things through?

Plenty of big U.S. airports have lived with this for years.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has been one of the few major U.S. hubs where people could still smoke inside designated rooms. Airport spokesman Andrew Gobeil has told The Associated Press that the smoking rooms will be repurposed.

Let me explain repurposed to you: generating revenue from retail & restaurants.

This is in no way unusual. Top of my head, none of the three NYC airports have any in-terminal smoking areas. BWI and DCA have none either.

The smoking rooms in Atlanta’s airport have a dubious past. They were financed by Phillip Morris in the 1990s to promote smoking while traveling after airlines banned smoking on planes.

https://www.wabe.org/surgeon-general-ca ... g-lounges/

Most airports are smoke free. Getting rid of this vestige of the past puts Atlanta on a more equal level with airports in the rest of the country

I only see airside smoking areas when passing through Asia and some euro ports. I've never seen them back home in Australia. Smoking is a gross and dirty habit and whilst I support the right for people to smoke, it is a choice and no where should have to cater for the habit.

Welcome to Canada circa 2002-2006.

Do any US states still allow smoking in public places like restaurants? I’d like to know which ones to avoid visiting.

We banned smoking in all indoor workplaces (with a few regrettable exceptions) here in Florida back in 2003, and, despite the doomsayers, the restaurants didn't close en masse and the tourists keep coming.

Glad to see ATL joining the 21st century. Smoking is a filthy addiction that only brings miserable grim death.

While not surprising, this is very disappointing as a smoker.

It certainly is a point I think of when booking. The only ones I'm still aware of are FRA, IAD and SLC.

While I get they are nasty, smoking areas past security provide a huge stress relief to those of us who do smoke, which is clearly fewer and fewer each year.

They got rid of them at SLC too. DEN has a smoking area, though.

As a smoker I'm disappointed. This made connecting in ATL a lot less of a headache. I get the reasoning behind it, but I never notice the smell leaking out of the rooms at all. Don't see why they need to get rid of them. People smoke, they're going to keep smoking whether the rooms are there or not, and they're going to clog security. Given the fact that the vast majority of people in ATL are connecting, they're all going to be going in and out of the sterile area, especially when there are delays. Me personally? I have Clear and Pre-Check so I'll most likely be through in 5 mins or less, but not everyone has these perks.

Smoking helps calm nerves and whatnot and the rooms didn't seem to cause others any problems....

Not true. Smoking in the casinos yes but smoking is banned indoors except for in the casino, and a few exceptions.

Due to the exemptions in the Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act, smoking is still allowed in the following places: Gaming areas of casinos where loitering by minors is restricted by law. Completely enclosed areas with stand-alone bars, taverns, and saloons in which patrons under 21 years of age are prohibited from entering.

Oh brother. And yeah, concessions. That’s what became of the outdoor smoking areas on the concourses at LAX. Was kinda cool, even as a non-smoker, to be able to go outside after security.

You'll never meet a more rabid crowd than some anti-smokers... Ironically, the smoking lounges will probably be turned into some greasy airport restaurant where those addicted to food can get their grub on before they take up 2 and 1/2 seats in a DL 737, or even better - a bar... I mean if we're going to shame the smokers, might as well shame all addictions.

I do my best to be respectful. NEVER smoke in a restaurant, hesitate to even smoke in a casino if the guy next to me isn't smoking, etc... The reality is that having passed through ATL many times and stopped in for a smoke, I never smelled it passing by one, never had a disgusted look by anyone walking by, and I thought it was a fair compromise for those who smoke vs those who don't. After a few hours without a cigarette, I can definitely smell smoke around me and whatever ventilation system ATL was using, it worked.

The smoking lounges have always seemed to be the most social areas as well, where people actually talk to each other, instead of desperately avoiding eye contact.

Even the smoking room at LAS has been closed for close to 10 years or more now so this is not that big of a deal.

Although I always find it humorous when the simpletons come out in force and condemn smoking tobacco due to the health effects and yet will smoke marijuana even in light of its obvious negative effects on the mind. It helps me understand better how at one time society though tobacco was harmless. Humans generally act as lemmings.

Never said smoking was healthy to begin with. But in an isolated, ventilated area, you have to voluntarily step in to be affected by it. Millions of people have walked by the smoking rooms at ATL and are still alive to talk about it today. Those who are in it, know the risk they're taking.

OK I stand corrected. I remember the old rooms without the slot machines, which they closed. I didn't realize they had these slot lounges.

If people want to smoke then we should let them smoke, their life, their choices. They can be whoever they want to be.

Like someone mentioned above, these will be most likely replaced by fast food restaurants which will contribute to the diabetes epidemic that's ravaging the US. I mean, according to official statistics, there are more than 100.000.000 people in the US living with diabetes or pre-diabetes.

But hey, as long as we are banning tiny rooms that anyone notices. And by the way, this is coming from someone who has asthma and who doesn't smoke.

This is a step in the wrong direction. Smoking lounges were a competitive edge and customer satisfaction point for ATL. Missed connections and security times will increase and productivity will decrease. In fact, smoking lounges should be put back in major airports where they have been taken out.

To me the rooms always did a pretty good job keeping the smoke in. What I didn't care for was having to sit next to somebody on a flight who was obviously just smoking in the room. It's one thing for somebody to have a smoke outside and have a ligth odor to them. But somebody who was smoke soaked is not an ideal seatmate.

Smokers are a minority and get treated as such. A lot of smoking bans are perfectly justified. Yet it is pointless to argument that is not correct to ban smoking on a location where one can only harm oneself. Then just ban smoking alltogether.

Not that I would care much, as a former smoker, now vaper, I never enter a dedicated smoking area to vape. Those area’s really are only bearable for real smokers.

I don’t have numbers, but would guess that a substantial percentage of people with medical issues have themselves to blame. Sugar, alcohol, drugs, driving when tired, sports, food, dangerous activities in general, ... .
You should exclude all of those from your medical bill to be correct.

And by the way, for those who don’t understand why people smoke: it’s the exact same mindset that causes people to thrash the planet while ignoring (or denying) the consequenses.

As a former smoker myself, I never understood why people have a hard time going a few hours without smoking. That said, I see nothing wrong with having those smoking rooms at the airports. Although if you have to sit beside a passenger who had just spent some time in one of those rooms, the smell is revolting.

Governments take billions in taxes from smokers each year, in the USA it's over 15 billion USD. The least they can do is put in some proper smoking rooms for smokers.
