I wondered if this is old news. But Air China ordered - and have taken delivery of - 10 A350-900s.

My Mandarin is a bit non-existent. Does the press release say Air China or CAAC (or whatever it's called these days)?

Congratulations to Airbus and Air China (or CAAC). This is wonderful news.
Never be proud. Always be grateful.

It's Air China not CAAC - in any case CAAC is not the one who bulk-orders aircraft, it's CASH (China Aviation Supplies Holding co.ltd)

I've heard from internal Airbus source that this is a new order not announced before.

Here’s the FlightGlobal take on it…

https://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/air-china-orders-20-a350s-459601/

The A350s are slated for delivery between 2020 to 2022, the disclosure notes.

A great endorsement of the aircraft from an existing carrier with a return order tripling the fleet size and an indication of A350-1000 orders in the future.

Makes sense.. Of the Big Chinese 3 Air China had the fewest A350s on order.. This brings them up to 30 which is a healthy number for airline of its size.. I also believe this order puts the A350 back over 900 orders.

Etihad cancelled 42 so I'm sure there a still some unallocated slots.. The article also mentions Air China received "price concessions". I'm sure Etihad paid a nice cancellation fee allowing Airbus to sell these frames at a competitive price

Airbus had announced, on Paris Air Show, that there is already a big A350 order in discussion, whiich would come soon, but too late to be any more announced on Paris Air Show.
Seems it is this one (or one of these already mentioned at Paris air Show, it was not named, if it was just one or several).

Does Air China has had some existing but not announced A350 options ongoing, which they have had now taken? Options have regular delivery times implemented. 2020 to 2022 is really early and fast, regular is according to my knowledge, something like 24 month, minimum 18 month from order till delivery date. Or they have just taken some delivery slots from someone else, who has cancelled an order or will ttake them later on.

I think some of these slots are from HNA Group, which may not take any more Airbus widebodies.

What other Chinese lessors have A359s on order? These could be from order books or BOC or ICBC, or someone similar, rather than the airline itself.

I wonder if CA bought EY's slots. The delivery date seems to be very early. There was rumors about China-US negotiations on Boeing wide-body purchase. This order seems leave the possibility of a 787-10 and/or 777-9 order open.

Awesome news.
The A350 needs more orders from operators that will respect it and not pack 400+ people inside it.

Slots are coming from various sources, not just a single place. Mostly Etihad, Hong Kong Airlines and Iran Air slots.

Sorry, I had the A330neo in mind.

But still, given the rumours about 10-abreast A350, it is important to sell it to operators that will respect the XWB in the name.

Let us hope, Cebu Pacific will never order any A350....
    A330-900 with 460 PAX...
A Cebu Pacific A350-1000....we would see them with 500 PAX.

Great news. By my reckoning, this years A350 orders/ commitments are thus:

    Emirates: 30
    Lufthansa: 20
    Starlux: 17
    Air China: 20

    Total 87

Not going to happen as A350-1000 is exit-limited to 440 pax.

The A330-900 has had an exit-limit of 440...has had recently...and than Cebu Pacific has asked Airbus for more. And now the exit limit is uprated to 460 PAX and tthe new A330-900 for Cebu will be delivered with 460 seats.
And when Cebu Pacific will ever order the A350-1000....and as Cebu ALWAYS packs PAX like sardines, pretty sure, they will ask Airbus, if the exit-limit can not be reduced for them to 280...oh, seems I forgot the {ironic on][/ironic of]

According to FlightGlobal The Cebu Pacific order for the 460 seat version of the A339NEO gets the 20 passenger increase due to a new Type A-plus Exit door that is being developed for the A350...

I’ve heard CEBU treat their passengers well though maybe not have been the best in dispatch reliability in the past.. They are a LCC so they aren’t selling luxury but it should be noted that the average Philipino is not usually large, the ladies are petite and would be more comfortable in a 16 inch seat than I am in 18 inch. It’s fine for a service worker trying to get to their job on Hong Kong from Manilla without spending to much money. Half the Middle East and much of Asia runs on Philipino workers, they’re a big part of the hotel workforce in Dubai, so there is a big demand for budget travel.

It would seem that in this niche airbus has found a market where it’s 18 inch wide seat standard allow them to fit a 16 inch seat. Asia has always been good for A. It made the A300.

Is that really something surprising though? The aircraft aren't even direct competitors and one is larger than the other. I'd more so be looking at 330/787 operators and 350/777 operators.
