Iran's Mahan Air has launched Shenzhen-Tehran direct flights on A340-600

Fri Jul 12, 2019 9:00 am

W5 has launched a twice weekly service btwn China's high-tech hub Shenzhen and Iranian capital Tehran, using its flagship A340-600 aircraft.

The flight departs at 11:10 p.m. from Shenzhen and arrives in Tehran at 5:10 a.m. the following day local time. The return flight leaves Tehran at 9:15 p.m. and arrives in Shenzhen at 9:30 a.m. It takes about 8.5 hours from Tehran to Shenzhen and nine hours and 10 minutes from Shenzhen to Tehran.

At about 6160 km, this route has become one of a very few longhauls flown by an international airline out of SZX.

Big congrats to W5 and SZX

Note how the recent Pakistani airspace closure has rerouted this service per Flightware

Big Question, why SZX and not HKG? Do the Iranians have business interests there or perhaps the Chinese mainland government
looks at the more favourably than the HKG administration?

SZX has subsidies and HKG has not
Btw they just swap 1 weekly frequency from IKA-CAN route

I would also probably say business ties are stronger with the mainland then with Hong Kong. Most Hong Kong companies will have business ties in Europe and North America so would be unwilling to do business with Iran.
