Chinese retaliation impact on Gulfstream Aerospace

Fri Jul 12, 2019 4:36 pm

China have announced that they will retaliate American companies that are involved in selling arms to Taiwan
One such company is General Dynamics with their M1A2 tanks
Given that Gulfstream Aerospace is their subsidiary, it is likely for them to be affected by such action from Chinese government.
What do you think its impact on the company will be?
Say NO to Hong Kong police's cooperation with criminal organizations like triad.

Not much, probably. It’s bit of a stretch to connect the two; any Gulfstream business in China (Jet Aviation and GLF planes) is small and done with influential Chinese. The government has for years cracking down on ostentatious goods, so sales are down or the planes based overseas.

Minimal. The private jet market in China is not that large. And the Party doesn't want the rich people and companies to own these things anyway.

It’s not that small either! Around 100 Gulfstreams are on Chinese register, making it the second largest market outside the USA. That’s not including the dozens of VP-,T7, N and M- registered jets based there either. But I agree the spat will never impact the sales of Gulfstreams jets in China.

There are other companies that may be potentially impacted. If Raytheon is to merge with United Technologies, well, UT has some substantial business in China (aircraft engines alone is significant)
BAE Systems, do they still have anything to do with civil aviation?

Beijing will try save face by "sanctioning" small fry like Gulfstream and those who do little business with PRC like Raytheon. When the Boeings get involved, Beijing will have to look the other way . And Boeing will have no say, 99.99% arms sales by US to Taiwan are Pentagon Foreign Military Sales contracts not direct commercial contracts. if eg Taipei wants a new Apache to replace the one they lost, or more sub launched Harpoons, or God forbid Super Hornets and not more F16s. As an FMS contract the Pentagon is the customer, not Taiwan (they may be the end user but legally the contracting customer is the USG). And Boeing isnt saying no to the guys there no matter what Beijing rants and raves.
They can do other stuff though. Like they did with the AH64E contract when Taipei was the first export customer and first customer for new build Es. They dragged their feet on industrial offsets (when Sikorsky and Bell were tripping over themselves offering huge offsets to Taipei for armed UH60s and AH1Zs) till the Pentagon dragged Boeings butts into the room to discuss with the TECRO folks (the quasi Taiwan diplomats in DC). But you can only be obstinate so far when the USG says this sale is going to happen and this contract for these guys is going to be tacked on to that huge US Army/AF/Navy contract for similar equipment.
