Fri Jul 12, 2019 9:53 pm

An Emirates A380 performing Emirates EK449 from from Auckland, NZ to DXB, has encountered heavy turbulence while in-flight to Dubai. The on-board lounge was strongly affected as the glasses and catering was all shattered and scattered in the bar area. the catering carts in the galleys was also damaged.

Gonna guess this was over the Bay of Bengal?
If you can walk away from it intact, it was a good landing!

I can imagine some passengers on that flight being shaken up by the turbulence and thinking, “after all that, I need a drink.”
The plural of Airbus is Airbuses. Airbii is not a word.
There is no 787-800, nor 787-900 or 747-800. It's 787-8, 787-9, and 747-8.
A321neoLR is also unnecessary. It's simply A321LR.
Airplanes don't have isles, they have aisles.

Insurance

An airline isn’t going to file an insurance claim for what amounts to a daily rounding error in their financials.

That’s what I noticed too. I *guessing* it didn’t fall off but instead something bumped into it and knocked it off. If it fell off that is some pretty violent turbulence and poor design.

Always wear your seatbelt when in your seat folks, be it seated or lying down. This is a good example why!

From the video it doesn't look like it's broken/smashed from being hit... I'd expect some chunks missing out of it if it was hit... but it's just laying there what seems to be intact.

You're right though, common sense would dictate it was hit to some degree.

Either way it must've been one hell of a rollercoaster ride.

That’s what happens when you think you are in a restaurant or a hotel and not a metal tube in the sky. We like to think we are so smart that we can avoid all turbulence and never have to make sudden maneuvers to avoid traffic, etc. but it will happen. Anything with any mass greater than individual food items or pillows needs to be secure at all times. To have all of that stuff loose on the bar or more than one cart unlocked at one time is bound to cause a catastrophe every so often. Even the whale is small in God’s eye.

Is there something unusual going on in the Earth's atmosphere right now? There seems to be a dramatic increase in "severe turbulence" incidents lately.

As an overall trend, yes. Lately might just be a statistical anomaly.

With global warming there is more energy in the atmosphere.

Also a dramatic increase in passengers recording everything.

I meant like the past month or two. Recording everything isn't that new of a thing.

Global warming, despite official American denials.

What's the betting that as soon as the turbulence ended, people went to the bar wanting a drink.

Some time pilots are able to detect turbulence up ahead and order everyone to buckle up. Other times not. What makes some turbulence visible to them others not?

I believe that aircraft in the lane ahead report turbulence and information gets passed along to whomever's going to hit it.
