Cabo Verde Airlines starting IAD

Thu Jul 18, 2019 2:11 pm

For the past few days I've heard commercials on the local radio stations in DC that Cabo Verde Airlines starting IAD service. No date in the commercials but they said that "you can book the flights from Dulles on airline website". I don't see Washington DC on their page yet.
Doing some research online, it says that the airline will fly to IAD 3 times a week using B757.

Just looked at their website and found nothing about them starting flights to IAD.

I wish they’d start flights to London . For connections to Bahia. Anything in the pipeline?

It is on their route map once as a "future" destination.

https://caboverdeairlines.com/informati ... /routemap/

However, I don't see it in booking for Cabo Verde Airlines.

Update: I found a series of tweets that hint at service by the end of the year.

Got email from the airline confirming start of the service to IAD. No exact dates yet, but it will start this year.

So bad Marketing Dept. planning with little Sales Dept. interaction (I hate when this happens). The ads should really run once a date has been set, but I'm sure Marketing will use the standard copout- we're building awareness and creating excitement (that listeners will forget about once they see not bookable). I've spent a large chunk of my career cleaning us messes like this one...

true. And yet here we are talking about the route...

I'm doing a trip to Cape Verde in January. Want to fly Cabo Verde, but, the 1x-3x a week service they had to most places doesn't work for me.
So, flying Air Senegal from Dakar and TAP up to Lisbon.

Wish I could have tried them, but, not the easiest airline to book on (which is probably your macro point Eta Unknown :)
Maybe you go help them? :)

So is this part of their Icelandair strategy to recreate the same business model?

It is, but good management is nowhere without good staff. The management might have come from Icelandair, but the staff came from the old TACV. They don't have the skills to think things through, in fact they barely think at all. Must be a managers nightmare to work with staff like that.

At one point they were always the cheapest option to FOR from Paris. Never tried it but I have a couple of friends who had horrible experiences flying them so I stuck with the usual TP via LIS and AF/AD via CAY until AF finally opened a direct flight.

Wasn't this all part of the strategy that Intervistas developed, and then had the team there?

There is no meaniful Cape Verde diaspora in DC. In the US its located in Massachusetts and Rhode island. I find it hard to believe that the IAD service is being seriously considered by airline management.

That's some interesting aircraft utilization. The only African destination it seems to connect to is Dakar, even then not so seamless. It also appears that they are dropping Boston if they already have not.

The same routes report had them flying to LAD from SID. I can't imagine this is going to work. TAAG already is in this market. How much traffic could there possibly be between Cape Verde and Angola?

They seem to be taking a page from Icelandair's book when it comes to overnighting their planes at certain US stops. It'd appear the same crew that brings the flight in, takes it back home.
Keep calm and wash your hands.

Are they adjusting the schedule to BOS while they're at it? Seems crazy to serve a route that has actual cultural ties once a week (with a multi-day turn, no less) while starting a brand new route with virtually no local market 3x weekly...

That may or may not be true. We have 235 Verdiano students here at Montgomery College. My Portuguese-speaking acquaintances *say* they are Brazilian since no one here knows where Cabo Verde is located.

Maybe they should be flying to BWI then.

Thing is though there's traffic from Africa to IAD they can tap into. However, they do not have enough service to Africa to warrant connections to IAD. The airline/hub have the potential though.

The flights to/from LAD are operated as a result of a partnership agreement between VR and DT. I wouldn’t be surprised if the DT flights are ending when the VR flights are starting.

They will still be flying to SID after VR starts but via SAO Tome:

DEPARTURE FLIGHT (DT502) Wed, 11 Dec 19
22:50 Luanda (LAD)
2H00
23:50 São Tomé (TMS)
Operated by
TAAG - Linhas Aéreas de Angola DT502 Aircraft
Boeing 737-700
Correspondence São Tomé (TMS) : 0H50
00:40(+1) São Tomé (TMS)
5H15
04:55(+1) Sal (SID)
Operated by
TAAG - Linhas Aéreas de Angola DT502 Aircraft
Boeing 737-700
RETURN FLIGHT (DT503) Thu, 19 Dec 19
06:25 Sal (SID)
5H05
12:30 São Tomé (TMS)
Operated by
TAAG - Linhas Aéreas de Angola DT503 Aircraft
Boeing 737-700
Correspondence São Tomé (TMS) : 0H50
13:20 São Tomé (TMS)
2H00
16:20 Luanda (LAD)
Operated by
TAAG - Linhas Aéreas de Angola DT503 Aircraft
Boeing 737-700

So it won't in the end offer any connections for VR.

The original plan was for TACV to take some of FI's 752's (the number was 10), as those were replaced by MAX's. But that plan suffered a setback following the MAX grounding.
Unless TACV knows something no other MAX customer knows, I doubt this will happen.

Unless things have changed, the third frame is ex. N687AA and is due to join the fleet later this year.

One of their current frames (D4-CCG) is indeed leased from FI (TF-FII), but it was at TACV already before the grounding. Be interesting to see if any more move once the grounding is lifted.

VR is starting SID-LOS in about a month. I am really worried about this. I want TACV to do well but I am fearful that an arrival in LOS at 0325 is going to work. And LOS is so competitive! Where are the passengers going to come from.
