Airlines and Routes from the old Dhahran Airport

Mon Jul 22, 2019 6:48 pm

Hey guys!

Anyone here know what routes were flown and what airlines used to serve DHA in Saudi Arabia, particularly in the 70s, 80s, and 90s?

Admins, please delete if there already is a topic on this.

Thanks.

I remember landing in DHA in the late 80s on an Austrian Airlines flight from Vienna. A lot of the big airlines from Europe or the USA flew to JED and RUH first, with an additional flight needed to DHA. Usually when we flew in, we had to do that, anyway.

Lot of good memories, as a small child, walking to those green striped Saudia TriStars. During Haj the DHA-JED flights would upgauge to a 741 or 742. Beautiful old birds.

When were you out there?
L101, 733/4/5/8, 741/2/3 (never managed 744!), MD 80/2/3/8/90, MD11, DHC8/3/Q4, E170, E195, 757, 77W, 763/4, Travel Air 2000. A300/310, A319/320/321, A333, ATR-72, probably a few others I forget. Passenger, not pilot, alas! BUD based.

At some point in the 80s I clearly remember:
Singapore Airlines flying 747s on a Singapore-Bombay-Dhahran and Singapore-Karachi-Dhahran routing.
Airlanka flying a weekly Tristar service from Colombo. and during some point it was a weekly Colombo-Dhahran-Rome-Frankfurt routing ( most likely no 5th freedom traffic rights).
Cathay Pacific flying 747s HK-Dhahran-Frankfurt.

TWA served Dhahran for decades on its routes to Bombay and beyond, mostly as a stop between Cairo and Bombay.

It was flown initially with Constellations and transitioned to 707s before being dropped prior to 1972. DHA had both terminators and through flights on the round-the-world route.

It was gone by 1972.

January 1989. Air France Paris-CDG to Dharan. Landed, a lot of fumigation, for mosquitos I presume. Then takeoff for Delhi.

Correct, believe dropped in December 1971 actually!

I lived there from 94 to 06. I remember flying RJ, SV, GF, and AI out of DHA before DMM started in 99.

Missed you! I was 84-91 and 94-95 (Jeddah in between and after) we mainly did Saudia flights in the early years, as I recall. (Many other airlines available, of course, just that the company wanted us to use Saudia. Hey, they were buying!)

Loved this airport. I grew up near DHA and used it right up until ops moved to DMM and left the country shortly thereafter.

From what I can remember, the new airport wasn’t very popular because of the long drive to the airport and the sheer size of it seemed to be a lost cause.

I’ll always remember DHA’s ease and elegance. Designed by Minoru Yamasaki, the arches just evoked such grace it’s really impossible to describe it in words.

As a kid, and a die hard av geek I loved walking out onto the tarmac seeing the striped Saudia Jumbos that seemed to dwarf everything around them. I do remember as we pulled away from the airport and got onto the highway the 2 saudia jumbos (one to BOM and the other to MAA) would dominate the lineup!

Getting back to the topic on hand, I remember flying AI, AF (310), BA (777), UL (L1011), GA (747), OS (310? Sorry was young haha and I just remember the classic livery). I also remember seeing PK and GF.

Overall, I miss that airport so much.

IIRC correctly, SQ’s flight routing to DHA was replaced with a SIN-DHA cv non stop terminator flight around the late 80s / early 90s, operated by the A310-300s, which was operated once or twice s week. And I think the flight number in used then was SQ404/403.

Was it the world's longest flight at that time?

Born and raised in Dhahran/Khobar.
In the 90s I used to fly mainly Egyptair to CAI at least 3 times a year and BA to LGW on the 767. Maybe EK to DXB once.
The old Dhahran airport was a dump-absolutely nothing to do. Notoriously long queues particularly at passport control and customs on arrival-KSA customs officials would search suitcases for porn, videotapes, magazines or books that might be deemed immoral.
Many people preferred flying out of BAH, which offered a much more civilized experience. Out of BAH you had what was then an excellent airline with a very good global network.
King Fahd International in Dammam opened in 98/99, replacing DHA. Remember flying on MS plus KLM and LH, as BA cut DMM after 9/11.

Air France had quite a few routes out of Dhahran.

CDG-DHA-AUH-DXB-DHA-CDG triangle route (1x A300)
CDG-DHA-DEL-BKK-MNL (1x 747-200), possibly the flight spinotter took
CDG-DHA-KHI-BKK-MNL (1x 747-300 Combi), ended when AF switched to CDG-BKK-MNL direct and rerouted flights to Pakistan through Abu Dhabi (used A310s)
