Spotting at Yellowknife Canada

Wed Jul 24, 2019 8:35 pm

Tuesday I will spend about 7 hours in Yellowknife, not a lot of movement there but is their a observation deck of a good place to spot at the airport?

Its more fun to go over to the Buffalo Airways hanger at YZF. All the historic but working aircraft are a much better variety then the AC and WS Q400s/736 types. You can support their merchandise operation and maybe get a tour of the hanger.

It is a nice airport to visit and the Buffalo Hangar is an easy walk from the terminal. Also there are additional hangars of other operators next door to Buffalo. There is a nice cafeteria in the terminal and typically you can walk back and forth between the terminal and the hangars. A quick visit to the downtown float base is also an option, I am told however that it is not nearly as busy as it used to be.

Air Tindi also have some cool equipment, as do Summit Air.

Also, take the opportunity to catch the legacy First Air and Canadian North equipment/liveries while you still can (the first ATR 42 has the new name/livery combo already...but that aircraft is based in Iqaluit)! You might even catch a 5T 732 while you're there, along with a Northwestern J31.

I agree with the above, go for a walk around and check out the different hangers. We were stranded for a few hours one day when our charter, Summit, had a flat tire, so we wandered over to Buffalo. Quite unexpectedly, Mikey walked in to help us, super nice guy, and we starting shooting the breeze, before you know it, we were sitting up front in one of the DC-3's, was super cool!! Bought some swag, and checked out the interesting memorabilia Our lucky day that day! Thanks again Mikey.
