Air Koryo is launching Macau

Air Koryo is launching flights to Macau. I thought they already flew to Macau. I know Air Koryo flies some odd routes.

This route is anything but odd.

How Macau became North Korea’s window to the world... and its nexus for weapons and drugs trafficking

That's the reason why I thought they flew there already.

Congrats to Air Koryo! Do you think it will be the Tu-204? Can't imagine they have anywhere close to its utilization on FNJ-PEK. Maybe the Il-62M?

They can only fly the Tu-204 and An-148 to China. The Soviets Ilyushins, Tupolevs and Antonovs are flying domestic or to Vladivostok. Looking at their flight schedule I am confident they can do it with the current fleet.

They have not flown to Macau for many years. In the past they flew the IL62 and TU154 with a rare visit by the TU134 and I remember one day all three IL76's coming in!! IL18,.... I don't think so.

For this... I will have a visit to Macau again.

There are lots of casinos in Macau. For his people's sake, let's hope that Kim Jong Un has a winning hand.

Didn't one of the Kim brothers sump down in Macau? The one who was murdered in KLIA? Stands to reason that the family has possessions and interests there.

Air Koryo served Macau in the past with scheduled flights, this was the September 1998 schedule operated by the Tu-154:

JS153:
Depart FNJ at 1000, arrive MFM at 1250 on Thursday
Depart MFM at 1350, arrive BKK at 1540 on Thursday.

JS154:
Depart BKK at 1200, arrive MFM at 1530 on Friday
Depart MFM at 1630, arrive FNJ at 2100 on Friday

Makes sense considering they have suspended Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Kuwait City flights due to sanctions. Macau being a more friendly city to North Korean interests once again.

Interestingly it looks like Air Koryo will be operating some kind of services to Ulan-Ude in Russia after recent talks between Russia and North Korea,

So I guess Macanese Banks are back in business laundering money for North Korea?

Well, with special blessing from CCP gov’t probably, as a reward for being “loyal” unlike its brother on the other side of the delta. :duck:

Kim Jong Nam did indeed live in Macau for years. He was forced to move around Macau, though, when Kim Jong Un tried to assassinate him back in 2014 or so.

Casinos make the best money laundering fronts!

By the way, if Kim Jong Nam had an assassination attempt, why didn't he try to defect to, say, the US?

Just because your brother has decided to murder you, doesn't mean your lifelong enemy suddenly becomes a friend.

Because when Kin Jong Nam stay in Macau, he's supposed to be protected by China as their alternative plan for North Korea. Which is also why they ultimately wait till when he's in Malaysia to conduct the assassination.

IIRC back when Air Koryo flew to Macau, those flights are often quite empty, but the belly? Well, drugs, weapons, money...basically anything you can think of.

Indeed - if one read enough into the Kim Jong-nam assassination, the original plan was to killed him in Macau. But they eventually decided to do it in KL instead as to not pissed off the wrong officials in PRC.

Ever is a looong time. But unless you have been living under a rock, you would know about the sanctions on North Korea... So, not anytime soon, no.
Also....would they need it? Traffic to NK is minimal. And the country is practically broke.

No, b/c by the time Air Koryo get Airbus/Boeing, they would be absorbed into Korean Air. Air Koryo management should be better than the Cho family, though. :duck: :duck:

During my one of my two HKG Kai Tak photo trips in 1996 (only times to Kai Tak) I visited MFM and photographed an Air Koryo TU-134. My only time seeing Air Koryo to date.

Actually, casinos make for horrible money laundering fronts, sure you can wash a few thousand, but any more than that you will have issues, when you're talking about the amount a country like North Korea would want to wash a casino is the last place to look.

From what I am remembering, Kim used Macau to bring high end goods back to North Korea, more of a pick up point than a drop off.

The IL76 fleet visited in a day taking stuff incl cars home....

TU-134B was P-814. Also the time with Eva Air 767-200, TAP A340, Air Macau Airbus fleet was fairly new; SAS Cargo 747-200F, Singapore Airlines A310 to name a few. Great stuff, great times!

I wonder what the logic was behind that. Most of the general public wouldn’t know the difference between the A319 and a real Air Koryo plane anyway.

Most journalists don't know the difference between an A319 and a TU-204.
The average journalist's knowledge on aviation matters is below pathetic. Wasn't there an Indian journalist quoted on this forum, who described the 77W and 787 as 'old technology'?

Some members of the general public are far better informed.
