Toddlers bag belt ride in ATL

Thu Jul 25, 2019 11:34 am

This may have been posted already. This toddler is lucky he didn't get hit with a pusher.

Terrible parenting, and someone at Spirit should have been watching who was behind the counter. I can't believe the kid made it through the xray machines and down a few sections before someone finally stopped the belt and grabbed him.

Side Note: when I first read the headline, I thought ATL put in a ride for kids that simulated a baggage belt. haha

Why am I having flashbacks to the "No Frills Airline" scene from "Airplane!"?

If they did, I would ride it! All 186cm x 125kg of me! (would my shoulders fit through some of the tunnels?)

Clearly you don't have kids. All it takes is 5 seconds for something to happen. Toddlers are incredibly curious.

Wishing the boy a speedy recovery for his broken wrist and hopefully he doesn't suffer any mental trauma.

I do have kids. I have flown with kids. And I watch my kids in areas with lots of confusion like an airport

You think this is the first child that's tried to do something like this? I know personally as a young child that was in to all things airport and airplane for as long as I can remember, that I was mighty tempted to jump on the conveyor belt at the airport. While I never did, I can pretty much guarantee you lots of other kids have at least thought of doing the same.

America's classiest TV program Jackass had Steve-O ride through the airport baggage x-ray machine. I think it fried more of his few remaining brain cells.

Can't say I'm surprised, kids are naturally inquisitive. I know when I was younger, everything about the bag belt system and the ground ops in general made my eyes go wide.

The sad part here is that Spirit was not monitoring their bag belt door as they are required to do. Its okay to have a portion of the counter closed but you have to have someone monitoring that door at all times when it is opened.

From the video the kid got on the belt at 14:45.
The agent stopped the belt where he got on about 15 seconds later
He was pulled off by TSA at 14:49:45. That's 4.5 minutes form the time someone knew he was on the belts.

Can someone explain to me how the belts were not completely stopped much much earlier. Almost five minutes. Surely there is a way to quickly stop the whole system if needed much faster than that.

Or a scene from any given Rugrats episode. He's like a real life Tommy Pickles.

Seriously though, you know toddlers are very "slippery," as they can slip right by you or away in a split second. Sorry lady, but I don't buy the "I turned away for one second," story. You have to be more vigilant.

People, and Kids, dying every day on this planet for doing stupid things. I must agree there is a need for making this system safer, stopping it all when the button is pressed, not only the first 5 meters.

Before criticizing the parents, I'd like to see the security videos (they must exist) of the check-in area to see how fast the kid moved and if he was being left alone or not. I imagine it can be as difficult as controlling my dog in a forest full of squirrels.

I have seen plenty of bad parenting at the baggage claim belts/carousels all over the world. The kids should not be anywhere the moving parts and baggage but that is often not enforced. If they aren't hurt by the machinery it is a miracle they are not bashed by people pulling heavy bags off the moving belt.

Likely the section that was stopped was about 100-300 feet and he continued crawling towards the machine which would take time (as the e-stop is designed for the ticket counter belt, not the portion behind it). I'm not familiar with how ATL's belt system is laid out but in some places it can be a long ride between the induction point and the TSA machines. Its not untypical for there to also be a wait to get into the TSA machines if there are a large number of alarms for TSA to clear as bags will then stack up at the entrance.

To have a single e-stop completely stop the entire system would cause havoc in daily operations; a call down to the control room and there would be someone there who could stop the entire section of belt but its certainly possible the folks at Spirit didn't know the phone number to reach them.

JFKIceman wrote:

A toddler is much smaller than about half of checked bags now a days so that wouldn't set anything off. Most oversize patrolling is done by the ticket counter agents; anything that slips by at that point that is too big for the belt/machines will cause a jam which then gets cleared when it sets off the alarm for a jam.

Not sure about dimensions but weight wise there's no way that the kid weighs more than the Spirit bag weight limit which is 40 lbs or up to 100 lbs with overage charges.

Coming from a nuclear (but not security X-ray!) background, seeing the boy going through the X-ray machine was scary! The good news is that the baggage screening cabinet X-ray machine only imparts about 1 milirad for a scan - far, far below the level of any radiological health concerns, even for a young child.

I'd love to roll my eyes, say something negative about Spirit passengers, and wag my finger about bad parenting, but having two kids of my own I can attest that it only takes a split second (maybe the time to hit "reprint boarding pass" on a kiosk?) for them to be off.

Pretty ridiculous to criticize the parents

A toddler / small child can be out of your sight in seconds

It can happen to even the ‘super parents’ judging others on this site

I'd say receiving a dosage of ionizing radiation increases the risk of damage to a developing organism. Of course, the risk is very small , since the dosage is low.

I saw some TV "magazine" program years ago, where it showed some whiz-bang baggage handling system behind the scenes. Part of it was where bags that had a few hours from check-in to loading were sent to this room filled with hundreds of cradles. The bags were parked in the cradles until loading time, then retrieved.

My mind turned to waiting rooms and the sheer torture of screaming kids, CNN droning everywhere, and crowded seating. It made those storage cradles look mighty comfy!

I have ridden the baggage area baggage conveyor belt. (What kid in their right mind wouldn't?!) ;-)

This was back the 70's and it was a nice flat "U" shaped conveyor set up. It was late, my dad's flight had been delayed and my mom was discussing with some airport person the situation. I had about a 20 second ride and got in a bunch of trouble for doing it but hey, I was maybe 5 and it was the obvious fun thing to do for a bored kid stuck waiting at the airport.

I have a confession....I did this at Logan in 1974. The Concorde came for the dedication of the Volpe Terminal (E). There was a large crowd outside around the aircraft and I was a 13 year old cutting school. I went downstairs and the baggage belt was running with nothing on it. I went to the far end where the belt went outside and took a seat, a few seconds later I was outside and mingled with the crowd looking at the plane, I even got in line and went onboard to have a look. It was a pretty good day for this kid. No way you could get away with that now.
