FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Thanks as always. Nice to see AA’s DFW-Kalispell return and start a month earlier.

AA’s reducing DFW-YVR in November, after the ORD cut...

Sucks that AC’s ending OMA. Saw their CRJ-200 land the one time I connected through there.

Reduction on UA’s LAX-MEL... will be interesting to see if that’s in anticipation of the AA/QF JV... or from them launching SFO-MEL.
If not, things will get interesting.

Thanks, as always, enilria.

I assume this is related to the withdrawal of Georgian 50-seat CRJs. Many if not most of the routes that will see upgauging will also see some frequency reduction. That’s hard to do at 1x/day.

The AC Hawaii cuts are almost certainly MAX-related.

AA PHX-YVR will also be suspend from 11/21, however both ORD/PHX-YVR are scheduled to resume 06/04.

I wonder why AA cant make YVR work.

It could be in response to the AA/QF however looking at the schedule UA still maintains an overall 7x weekly service to MEL from the US.

While this years IATA summer 2019 reduction on LAX-SYD can be directly attributed to a shortage of 788/789's equipment (with the current schedule we only have 1 spare 789 frame to cover both the 788 and 789 fleet), the reduction of LAX-MEL during November, February and March can not be attributed equipment shortage even though several 788s/789s will be out of service for Polaris/PE installation. What will be equally as interesting is if UA restores LAX-MEL to daily service at the beginning of IATA spring 2020 once the seasonal SFO flight ends.

I’m curious about ANC-RDB. Is it going to chartered service or is there something up with mine?

I believe this route was always going to be seasonal but is now being cut in September instead of November. Who knows if it will return in spring. Either way, it’s a mystery why they chose to compete against DL daily/2x service on this route with Tuesday and Thursday only seasonal flights. To no one’s surprise it appears that lasted about 4 months.

It is a charter service they have been doing was quite some time as the airfield PADG is owned by the mine.

AS9671 is the outbound flight number, with AS9672 on the return.

Thanks as always, e.

re NK in MCO/Florida, I wouldn’t say that this is a major shift one way or the other. In TPA, you see two sub-daily routes shift to MCO, yet the overall trend is up 4-5 daily flights YoY, for example. The only story I see is the shift from sub-daily flights (a la AirTran) to a consolidation at a single destination.

I am surprised to see NK add PHX-SEA nonstop service, especially since NK has a minimal presence in the PHX market.

There are still some other nonstop routes that could be added by NK out of PHX such as PHX-ATL, PHX-DTW, PHX-FLL, PHX-LAS, PHX-MCO, and PHX-TPA.

Looks like the new UA* DEN-HOB will start Oct 27 and operate by SkyWest with a CRJ-200. The current flights from HOB to IAH will switch from ExpressJet ER4's to SkyWest CRJ's as well.

It's still interesting to see them move anything from FLL. Things are so constrained there I'd think they'd be reluctant to give up any "slots".

It may just be because it is a charter. Since they are not selling the flight via GDS they may not pay too much attention to whether it is correct in OAG. Or who knows...

I think they are generally moving off of transborder routes. Places like BNA get CR9s with less frequency in the fall.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I do know in the year they have been in the market NK has had a tough time getting traction on AVL-Florida vs. G4. MCO is the one airport where NK has a little bit of differentiation vs. G4 (closer to Disney than SFB), and although I haven't looked at the schedules, MCO maintains the NK connections to the Caribbean and Latin America which are also a selling point in AVL vs. G4.

Looks like a small drop in March from IAH 0.6/week to 0.5/week. Maybe dropping one flight per week.

I agree that NK adding PHX-DTW and PHX-FLL might happen since PHX-DTW and PHX-FLL/MIA are two of the top routes out of PHX that aren't currently served nonstop by NK. There are also currently no ULCC's serving the DTW or FLL/MIA markets nonstop from PHX or AZA, and both DTW and FLL are two of the largest NK stations.

I'm shocked to see the increase of service to ONT...They must be seeing $$$ Perhaps they should up-gauge from the 738, to 757/A321/767.

This article says the aircraft are staying, but moving to another operator within AC. Are you sure they are now getting ride of the CRJ-200s? I need to know for something I'm working on. Thanks!

I think they are generally moving off of transborder routes. Places like BNA get CR9s with less frequency in the fall.

Ok, so not certain. Just tea leaf reading?

I agree that NK adding PHX-DTW and PHX-FLL might happen since PHX-DTW and PHX-FLL/MIA are two of the top routes out of PHX that aren't currently served nonstop by NK. There are also currently no ULCC's serving the DTW or FLL/MIA markets nonstop from PHX or AZA, and both DTW and FLL are two of the largest NK stations.

No longer true as of Nov.

With about 36 changes listed -- the most I've seen in a LONG time -- it looks like AS's Nov 5 sked is finally released. Not that this is the final version, but at least some serious work is being done it. Nothing terribly exciting (particularly for my city) but we'll see what happens next.

I really do think it's a bit early to get too excited about the redux of SFO-PDX and a perhaps coincidental increase in the market down the Bay; heck, it might just be a/c changes...

What I find even more interesting is the increase in SJC-SNA by 2 daily departures! Where did 2 new SNA slots come from? (I see no other changes at John Wayne at this time.)

In fact I just looked at the Nov skeds for AS and guess what? In November, PDX-SFO will op with 6 mainline jets & 1 EMJ (totaling 7 per day) while PDX-SJC will be 6 flights a day, but 4 will be EMJs & 2 Boeings. Looks like definitely more capacity at SFO than SJC.

I also see that AS is putting an EMJ on PDX-SAN -- as the new 4th daily flight -- so there does appear to be re-gauging of a/c in some markets. In fact, that could explain the increase in SJC-SNA service although I still don't know where AS got the additional slots at SNA.

A story that stands on its own is SJC gaining on two routes, including slot controlled SNA. And SFO loses again. Like our host said, reading the tea leaves.

Edit..ok, capacity adjustments. Fair enough.

I didn’t notice, anything significant at SAN?

I'm still waiting for those WN changes to show up. Hopefully anyday now. Maybe at the same time they announce SAN/SMF-HI services.

As for SNA, I remember something about additional slots opening up later in the year when it hasn't been fully utilized up to that point.

Not surprising, given the total passenger count at SFO versus SJC.

Calm down. DL's domestic F 767s are gone, and there's zero - and I mean zero - chance of a lie-flat int'l config DL 767 regularly scheduled on ATL-ONT.

I think some things have changed with the transition of Air Georgian aircraft from to Chorus/Jazz but can’t find any announcement. The CRJs originally were to transition to Jazz by the end of 2019 but in the January timetable I see Air Georgian flights to virtually all current cities (the exceptions are CLT, BNA, and RDU, which see upgrades to 76-seat equipment). I can’t help with the current plan.

WN re-adding SNA-MDW on a year-round basis will probably happen once additional slots become available at SNA and/or capacity restrictions are loosened at SNA as the lack of SNA-MDW nonstop service is one of the biggest holes.

One interesting note that isn't reflected in the fall schedule is that on 11/5, DCA becomes an all-A321neo station for AS.

737-900 seems the most likely, and *maybe* 321. Being as ONT doesn’t require the 757’s performance, I would say it would be unlikely other than random equipment subs.

As I mentioned in my post reflected above, nothing exciting for SAN except that our service to PDX looks like it's heading for a permanent increase (year-round.) Maybe that's due to SY adding token service in the market but whatever, I'll take it! (AS protecting it's PDX hub or it's focus city of SAN from outside intrusion?! Yeah right!)

Otherwise, I'm still creating a turn-sked for SAN effective Nov 5 and so far have seen some changes, including retiming of some markets, but not much else.

BTW, I don't think I've asked this question before but does anyone know why AS is starting their fall schedule on Nov 5, in the middle of the week following the loss of Daylight Savings Time on Sunday, Nov 3? Seems kind of odd to me... It's another tradition -- issuing schedule changes usually on the Sundays that DST starts and stops -- that I suppose isn't really that relevant anymore but hey, it's a tradition! "Does that mean nothing to anyone anymore?!" ;)

With NK building up MCO, perhaps they are not only trying to compete against WN, but also getting ahead of B6? Terminal C will open in a few years and JetBlue is supposed to be the largest tenant IINM. I wonder how NK could affect any long-term expansion planned by B6.

Since you mentioned DCA going to all A321NEO, do you know anything about BOS? BOS-SFO/SAN and LAX are all still A320. BOS-SAN/SFO are most concerning as the A320 will constantly be tech stopping for fuel? Do you know if they’ll will switch to A321NEO or back to Boeing?

I am surprised to see NK add PHX-SEA nonstop service, especially since NK has a minimal presence in the PHX market.

There are still some other nonstop routes that could be added by NK out of PHX such as PHX-ATL, PHX-DTW, PHX-FLL, PHX-LAS, PHX-MCO, and PHX-TPA.

NK's new VP of Network was the VP at AS before he got sacked in the layoffs last fall. I have to wonder if this route is based on knowledge gained on the market at AS.

Couldn’t agree more with your assessment. It has obviously been hard for NK to compete with multiple daily flights offered by G4 to FLL. I thought that NK might have more name recognition in South Florida which would help the service but clearly it hasn’t. I think refocusing on MCO where, as you mentioned, they have an advantage based on location will help them. This will be quite similar to the old FL days that focused on MCO. They will have numerous connections and daily flights. I think they should fare well with this approach. I worry about GSO though. Reducing destinations by NK is concerning for their service there. I’m afraid opening RDU will hamper any growth at GSO by NK.
