WDL flying for easyJet

Mon Aug 05, 2019 10:21 pm

Anyone know why D-ACJJ, a WDL E190, is currently flying for easyJet? It seems to have been operating for them since the end of July, based out of LGW.

Its fairly common for European carriers that are big on the bucket and spade routes to bring in chartered capacity in the summer months, this year the MAX issue has meant that there is a even bigger demand on the main AMCI companies as a result U2 might not have been able to find anything larger to charter in at a reasonable rate
Must think up a new one soon, slow moving brain trying to get into gear ;)

WDL has been flying BAe 146 for U2 out of TXL for months, nothing to do with bucket and spades or the max.

I don't have any knowledge of why but my bet would be either a shortage of crew or a delay in aircraft deliveries

This was confirmed last month, it's so that easyJet can have more spare aircraft to more effectively cover for disruption. However given the capacity drop for A319 vs E190 this seems like a strange choice... there also doesn't seem to be any consistency in the routes it's operating, they must be scheduling it on routes with less than 110 or so booked seats..?

I don't think it has been operating U2 routes for quite a while now... haven't they switched to their own aircraft only at the TXL base now? I may also be wrong

This D-ACJJ E-190 seems to be based at LGW. So nothing to do with TXL or the previous BAe operating from there for a whole different airline EJU (Easyjet Europe) ;)

Previously this E.190 operated just one day for Air Italy and for quite longer for HOP! from different French bases: LYS, TLS...

WDL flew for EZY out of TXL last year following the collapse of airberlin and the subsequent takeover of much of their operation out of TXL by easyJet. They just don't have the aircraft to cover the entire operation as of yet.

D-ACJJ positioned into LGW from CGN on 31st July, and began operating flights on 1st August.

It is apparently covering for a delayed A321 delivery. Because of this, it operates a varied selection of routes, depending on which had the lowest bookings when the decision was made to lease cover and only an E190 was available at short notice.

There probably wasn’t much else available. Since the MAX grounding ACMI availability in Europe is very limited.

Yeah - they usually use Smartlynx, but clearly they didn't have any availability

YL-LCO and YL-LCU from Smartlynx operate on behalf of EasyJet, however they're based at TXL
