Lufthansa Polling On Which City To Send A380 To (ORD, SEA, TPA, DFW)

Tue Aug 06, 2019 2:52 pm

SEA
TPA
DFW
ORD

Not sure if this is just a random poll with no meaning or how they selected those cities, interesting nonetheless.

TPA I know doesn't have an A380 capable gate, does SEA?

TPA! But I font think TPA can handle a whale. Airside F would be a cluster.

Is this poll just for fun or are they actually going to send a one-off to the winner?

Clearest sign yet that LH don't know what to do with their A380s!

They're now outsourcing the decision to the brilliant users of Twitter. -ir

Frankly, of those airports I can't imagine anything but ORD having year-round, daily demand for an A380.

From a financial point of view, the only city that would seem viable with feed from other Star network carriers would be ORD.

I don't have a twitter account - can you see how many votes each city has gotten? Also, I'm assuming this would be a one-off flight?

SEA can only handle the A380 on an emergency basis.

So... TPA would fill about 80% of an A380 if everyone that has voted flew that day? ;)

Its obvious. ORD is getting the A380. SEA doesn't have the huge yield premium and can't take it, TPA/DFW aren't *A hubs. Also the only other city that could get the A380 is IAD.

DFW can handle a 380 but the daily LH flight arrives pretty close
to the current QF 380 flight, so I could see a problem jockeying for the single 380 gate
if QF 7 is running late or the LH flight arrives early.

Personally ,. I'd rather see a new LH 359 or a B748I at DFW , but that's just me :)

It won't happen until the new OGT is built and they would not look at moving their entire LH operation to T5 for one flight.

I was just going to ask about this. LH currently departs from T1 (B concourse, IIRC), but ORD’s A380 gate (is there even more than one?) is in T5.

Would make connections from domestic UA flights a lot harder.
The plural of Airbus is Airbuses. Airbii is not a word.
There is no 787-800, nor 787-900 or 747-800. It's 787-8, 787-9, and 747-8.
A321neoLR is also unnecessary. It's simply A321LR.

Maybe the "losers" in this poll are the cities being considered for the 2 new MUC routes and possible Eurowings routes that LH is going to be announcing. Maybe ORD for the A380, SEA and DFW get Munich, and TPA for Eurowings.

I thought the word was LH was making TPA a “mainline” destination and swapping out the Cityline A343s?

Eurowings makes sense, being a tourist destination and all. But I wonder if TPA will get the A359 or 789 from LH once the A343 is retired.

BOS, from what I gather, is one of the tighter places to maneuver the A380...yet will have three of them visit next summer...BA, LH, and EK. We know LH will; BA and EK currently use it and would presumably reinstate service next spring (no one is using it here through the winter, aside from a brief December-January trial with EK coming up).

I think 'escort vehicles' need to accompany the plane while it navigates the taxiways at Logan. Anyway, demand for the capacity is obviously there. Do other airports need vehicles to escort A380s around, or is BOS a unique case?

I live in Tampa. From all the German I overhear constantly one 380 a day may not be enough. Really. (ok. Not really.) Lots of Germans hitting the beaches summer and winter.

Strange that YVR is not a seasonal LH A380 destination given the number of German tourists coming every year. BA does well with theirs on this seasonal summer route.

I vote for San Diego! Seeing a 380 glide in over Bankers Hill and downtown would be quite the sight, watching it take off would be epic also!

Which gate? TPA doesn't even have a gate with double jetways, let alone 3 that most 380's use.

Well, instead of a larger aircraft from FRA there is the summer seasonal flight from MUC to YVR. Operated by a mix of A346 and A359 this year.

I did just wonder if it is meant to influence the airport management, by revealing some aspects of consumer demand.........
