Probably because the the line of storm clouds in the NY/DC area are blocking flights from even getting to/from BOS from the west. After all, it is very unadvisable to fly through thunderstorms as they have caused fatal crashes in the past.

Doubtful. They'll reaccomodate them at a later time. Maybe they can get her through EWR since there's a 4 hour GDP in place which may imoact the UA ZRH flight, and a much later ZRH on Swiss.

Finally heading to DTW, just south of London (Ontario, Canada). That's going to have a domino effect on all the flights for Qantas back to Australia. I would not be surprised if passengers on this flight from JFK are kept on to BNE and then handled there to their final destinations, while potential overbookings on LAX-BNE are routed onto A380s to MEL and SYD.
