East coast storms: 8/7/2019, diversions and more

Hey guys, pretty bad storms running through DC right now. Looks like all flights to IAD are diverting, such as UA291 SFO-IAD, UAL804 NRT-IAD, ASH 6010 MSY-IAD, and others.

UAL107 MUC-IAD also appears to be diverting.

EDIT: All flights to IAD and EWR appear to be diverting or in a holding pattern

My wife is stuck on the ground in RIC waiting to depart for IAD. She's supposed to connect to UA52 to ZRH. In a situation like this where many if not most connecting pax are delayed getting in, will UA generally hold departing flights to allow them to make the connection?

Doubtful. They'll reaccomodate them at a later time. Maybe they can get her through EWR since there's a 4 hour GDP in place which may imoact the UA ZRH flight, and a much later ZRH on Swiss.

- 75% of flights through Boston are diverted/delayed/cancelled.
- 80% of flights through New York are diverted/delayed/cancelled.
- 80% of flights through DC are diverted/delayed/cancelled.
- 33% of flights through CLT are diverted/delayed/cancelled.
- A little under half of flights through MIA/FLL are diverted/delayed/cancelled, I have no clue why.

Any DL flights that were already in the air diverted to other hubs. Those coming from the west diverted to DTW, and those from the south diverted to ATL. Some of the AS flights due into JFK and EWR didn't depart yet and may be canceled.

Most UA flights diverted to ORD or IAD, although UA1051 diverted to CLT and UA595 went to DTW.

As for LH402, it actually made it into EWR, but it looked as though it was going to divert to PHL.

Multiple flights to EWR are diverting to IAD. 787-10 and 764 have already flown by my house.

Finally heading to DTW, just south of London (Ontario, Canada). That's going to have a domino effect on all the flights for Qantas back to Australia. I would not be surprised if passengers on this flight from JFK are kept on to BNE and then handled there to their final destinations, while potential overbookings on LAX-BNE are routed onto A380s to MEL and SYD.

Probably because the the line of storm clouds in the NY/DC area are blocking flights from even getting to/from BOS from the west. After all, it is very unadvisable to fly through thunderstorms as they have caused fatal crashes in the past.

It isn’t just fear of crashing. Better radar detects the worst weather, but lightning and hail can damage planes. Flying through storms like these can cause enough damage to take days to repair. The bonding and grounding inside the airplane structure is better than it used to be to avoid the risk of a crash, but lightning will still cause damage that still must be repaired.

Timing was different. The weather at IAD was a single line of storms that moved through and then all was perfectly fine. Thus, flights were diverting from IAD earlier (the LH and EY flights land roughly 1600-1700 Eastern), but fairly shortly after that, IAD was able to take diversions. The weather was perfectly fine by 1730 even at DCA.

These storm threads are so interesting and a favorite part for me on a.net.

Summer thunderstorms keep everyone busy. It took me almost 7 hours to fly GRR-MSP on Monday afternoon, with a divert to OMA, a 2.5 hour sit there, then a highly circuitous, Omaha-Aberdeen, SD-Fargo-St.Cloud, MN-MSP routing getting home. Made it safe, and that is all that matters. Stay safe everyone. Tomorrow will be interesting too as everyone is going to have aircraft and crew out of place.

Didn't have time to thank you yesterday. Appreciate the reply. As it turned out all departures ended up taking 35+ minute delays and my wife made it aboard - barely. They closed the door behind her and pushed back a few minutes later.
