Near Wing Tip Strike BA A319 @ Heathrow

Sat Aug 10, 2019 2:01 pm

Watching a live stream of landings at Heathrow earlier and SHT13H/BA1327 A319 (G-EUPT) from Newcastle came very close to hitting its left wing tip on the runway during a hairy crosswind landing.

Not close at all. It is windy there for sure.

No it didn't.

Hard landing? Sure

Wing almost hitting the runway? No. The wing dipped but came no where close to hitting the runway.

In the 20 seconds or so prior to touchdown, the video shows the normal response from the aircraft to the sequence of minor corrective control inputs by the crew. It is clear to me that the crew was very much in control of the aircraft.

With the WX/wind conditions present at the time, are there often unexpected gusts/crosswinds at transition? Yes.
Does the video demonstrate that the crew was aware and responsive all the way to touchdown? Yes.
Did video show that the wingtip almost struck the runway? Not in my opinion.

Err... the landing in question is in the 1st 15 seconds... reckon 0:12 is when the wing s at it's closest. Maybe 6 feet or so off the runway?

Well that left main wheel might be due for inspection after this landing.
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!

There was no trail of smoke or sparkling on wingtip strike. I saw youtube in Hamburg strong gusty wind 737-500 or 300. It was hitting wingtip and could see trail smoke or sparkling strike on the runway. 737 made go around and successfully landing safety later.

Yes, sorry it was an A320 not a 737. Correct.

Thanks,

Another, much closer view; https://youtu.be/4mvkb_O-r8E?t=16808

While the sudden wing dip does look dramatic, it recovers immediately and it's all over within a second.
