FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

F9 and RDU surprises me. I figured that was a sure win. Good thing I'm not an airline CEO...

Honestly not surprised PVD isn't working for them. F9 didn't seem to have much luck in PVD either and now they're back in BOS, I wonder if SY will follow

With AM pulling MAX flying out of DL hubs will we see more DL substitutions (next week, or beyond)? That would be a nice bonus for DL pilots looking for extra flying in the off season.

I suspect. They said it in the quarterly call which would imply it is a significant level of flying. I think it's a big deal that AM is the first carrier to remove all future MAX flying. That turns temporary route decisions into more permanent route decisions.

PVD-PUJ was probably paid mostly by Apple and when that went away they needed to also pull the setup flight which was probably a LAS "based" plane.

UA ABQ-ORD Oct 3>2[3]
UA ABQ-SFO Oct 3>2[3]

Both of these deletions were going to be new additions with UA mainline aircraft, The SFO would have been the first mainline flight on the ABQ-SFO route. Almost everytime UA adds more flights from ABQ (and who knows how many other places), they pull them before they start.

Good info on this report.

Am I imagining things, but didn't this site offer once the ability to hover or click on either a city code
or airline code and a tiny popup window would open showing the city name or airline name?

I know a-netters know most of the codes, but I always see a few weird ones that make me think:
"where's that or who's that."

Thanks a*net.

[Sarcasm] Close in mainline cuts, what could that possibly be related to? [/Sarcasm]

It doesn’t surprise me. F9 breezes into town announcing all kinds of routes. If they are even there a year later, then celebrate. They did this at SJC, big route adds all over the place, then a year later only DEN and LAS remained and neither were daily.

I don't know of it's possible to be surprised by F9 anymore. :)

Seems interesting that they cut Fla flights, but yet they still have service to PWM, SYR, ALB, etc. I'd actually rather have PWM, SYR, and ALB than more flights to Florida.

RDU-Florida from memory: DL (TPA, MCO, MIA, FLL, soon JAX), F9 (MCO, TPA, PBI, RSW, JAX), WN (TPA, MCO, FLL), G4 (PIE, SFB, PGD), AA (MIA), B6 (FLL).
Sometimes we don't realize the good times when we're in them

I'm sure that DL is jumping with joy about F9's schedule trimming in RDU... This year, DL is supposed to break the 4 million passenger mark in RDU in 2019, and will likely become bigger in RDU than UA was in CLE!
When I do not reply, chances are that I've stopped checking the thread, and I still think you're wrong!

I'd guess the F9 cuts to RDU are seasonal (who really knows at this point), but I am surprised (even though I shouldn't be because this is F9 we're talking about) that they're cutting Florida routes in the winter, when more people would be flying down there for vacation, but I guess this is why I'm not a network planner.

The story in the San Diego thread is that this is also a MAX cut. No confirmation, but the best explanation available thus far.

Confirmed somewhat in an article (here's the link):

A Swoop spokesperson confirmed to The Points Guy that San Diego flights were delayed due to the grounding of the 737MAX at parent WestJet and they now plan to begin serving SAN in summer 2020.
https://thepointsguy.com/news/why-swoop ... grounding/

(Thanks to Hawaiian717 for this over on the SAN-thread.)

I'm not holding my breath that this will ever happen but at least there's an explanation from the carrier so I can hope we will see this new carrier in SAN some time next year!

Both of these deletions were going to be new additions with UA mainline aircraft, The SFO would have been the first mainline flight on the ABQ-SFO route. Almost everytime UA adds more flights from ABQ (and who knows how many other places), they pull them before they start.

With the Max out, they simply don’t have enough mainline aircraft.

Are you saying that these flights were going to be upgraded to mainline, but were canceled instead? Because the report and my memory both say that these were 3 daily last October.

Many of those are Express flights.

Right, but that doesn't mean they are not MAX related. When faced with an unexpected aircraft shortage the airlines have two basic choices for each effected flight, cancel it, or replace the planned aircraft with one from a less important flight.

Looks like it'll be Dec 2H/New Years for EGE only, jives with them doubling down on GJT a week or two ago. Yes it is a drive from GJT to EGE but half the time the EGE flight diverts or cancels due to WX and most people end up going to GJT or DEN and driving.

DL's operation at RDU is mainly set up for O&D traffic. Someone can add more details or correct me if I'm wrong, but DL does sell some connections at RDU, but the number of connections are low and the amount people doing connections here is not that many.

Also, I've been forgetting to mention, but thank you Enilria for posting these every week!

Honestly not surprised PVD isn't working for them. F9 didn't seem to have much luck in PVD either and now they're back in BOS, I wonder if SY will follow

The PUJ cut has everything to do with the well publicized deaths of tourists in the DR and the David Ortiz shooting. The LAS is a trim from 4 per week to 2 per week except certain weeks in October.

They are still launching new service to MSY and LAS and run both MSP and BNA 4 or 5 times weekly since they entered PVD. BOS goes away for the season completely. Not sure how that equates to “not working.”

F9 runs flights to 6 destinations from PVD and 4 from BOS, again, not sure how this means they didn’t have “much luck.”

Many of those are Express flights.

Airlines replace mainline flights with RJs and then cancel RJ routes as a common strategy to minimize impact. So it could be MAX related. Probably is.

I’ve actually seen surprisingly little capacity pulled from PUJ. Ortiz death has zero to do with tourism, despite the coverage.

F9 has tried AUS, ATL, MYR, MIA, and MSY from PVD and they've all been cut so I would call that not having "much luck". Who knows, maybe SY will be a huge success in PVD, we'll see if these routes are still around next year.

I was guessing this was seasonal because nothing on Frontier's website is bookable beyond the first week in March, and the summer seasonals usually return to RDU in April, IIRC.

I don't know that 'bigger than UA in Cleveland' is worth celebrating but DL's ops in RDU do seem to show patient expansion year after year.

United just added an all new United Club to its list of locations this is the first new location added in 15 years. The new United Club is located at RDU, and it opened officially on Aug 10th. According to UA they built this club in this brand new location because we are seeing increasing premium demand as we attract more high value customers living and working in and around the Raleigh/Durham area.

Although DL has a sizable lead at RDU in this market, UA under Kirby and Munoz are doing all they can to to catch up and UA is continuing to attract more business and leisure traffic out of RDU.

Side note MSY's new United Club opens later this year. I have no problem with Gulfstream500's celebration, DL is the clear industry leader here in the U.S.. However, I wouldn't be so quick to discount UA. Smisek and and his administration are gone, UA under Munoz now has their eye focused on the domestic market and UA is clearly seeing growth.

Sure they could fly them for March only, but skipping Winter to add Florida for April would be quite illogical.

I'm not holding my breath that this will ever happen but at least there's an explanation from the carrier so I can hope we will see this new carrier in SAN some time next year!

bb

With the MAX grounded until at least January (looking longer than that) Mainline don’t have the 738s to spare to ramp WO up to the planned fleet of 10 by year’s end.

What’s up with Porter and the seasonal MLB and MYR routes? That must be a filing error. I just saw PD advertising MLB earlier today.

We're on the same page that it is illogical for the Florida destinations (sans MCO and MIA) to be skipped in the winter and resume in the spring, I just find it hard to believe that those destinations are cancelled altogether. I'm a little biased in my confusion as RDU is my home airport, but all of the routes that F9 are dropping from RDU were only operating in the summer season anyway (except for RSW, which started as a winter seasonal route, TPA only just started this year as a summer route and I was under the impression that MSY and PBI were year-round service).

Many of those are Express flights.

Airlines replace mainline flights with RJs and then cancel RJ routes as a common strategy to minimize impact. So it could be MAX related. Probably is.

Just to be clear. David Ortiz is alive and well now, still recovering from the shooting, but I agree with you that I can’t imagine that having much to do with the drop in tourists to the DR.

I find it unlikely that Frontier is dropping ALL of those listed airports from Raleigh... This year they are kickstarting a lot of new winter service a lot earlier than usual — so this could simply be the shifting of aircraft to routes that can be more successful in the winter. Doesn’t necessarily mean all the routes have been dropped.

It's just not Ortiz. Quite a few Americans have gone missing and/or murdered in the D.R. this year. I had to cancel a trip made through Southwest Vacations to Hawaii this year, and the agent on the phone said they are getting an unusual amount of cancellations to PUJ, so my refund took longer than anticipated.

I was trying to make a point about the news coverage about the Ortiz shooting in New England compounding the issues and news coverage of the many mysterious deaths in the DR and have cast a very negative shadow about vacationing there, more so in New England than in other regions because of the shooting.

I understand, but I was just trying to clarify that David Ortiz was not killed because eniliria wrote “Ortiz death” in an earlier post is all.

The CA cut mean more available frequency for Zone 1 Chinese cities to America on Chinese side if anyone still want to start new flights out of the three cities.

Yes they had the incidents where people would die suddenly in their hotel rooms. Typically after having a drink at a bar. Although that seems to have stopped.

According to the RDUAA statistics, RDU had 3800 connecting pax in June. Assuming all of those are on DL that would still be less than 2% of their boardings.

3,800 connections for June is a 68% increase over last June, which leads me be believe much of that growth is F9 (who's added many flights in the last year).

I'm not sure how the airport measures connections, but I feel like DL's is probably more like 5-8% connections.

I would imagine WN and AA (to LHR) have a handful of pax connecting as well at RDU.
