Hong Kong airport disruptions due protest

Mon Aug 12, 2019 8:00 am

Except departing flights that have already finished boarding procedure and arriving flights that have already departed will not be affected, all other flights coming into or going out of Hong Kong today have already been canceled.

Traffic is still landing and taking off. Maybe it was temporary?

Airport Express just announced they stopped In Town Check-In, but trains are still operational

The closure is likely to do with the protest in the departure / arrival hal

CX701 seem to have just departed, though. https://www.flightradar24.com/CPA701/21a99132

So the disruption seems to be kept to a minimum.

In a statement on Monday, Hong Kong's Airport Authority said they were cancelling all flights that were not yet checked in.

Interestingly, BA's website shows tonight's BA32 and BA28 as still operational:

Image

Yet the HKG airport website shows a sea of red cancellations, including BA's two flights:

I wonder which is correct?
I only turn left when boarding aircraft. Well, mostly. All right, sometimes. OH OKAY - rarely.

Looks like CCA105 flight between DLC and HKG diverted and landed at SZX to avoid being stuck into HKG...

Maybe not the only one, but I tracked this one.

Image

Edit: Clearly not the only one. A lot of flights are returning back to their departure airport.

QR816 DOH-HKG is turning around over Bangladesh....

looks like most CX flights airborne are continuing on to HKG. The closure may be more to do with potential compromise to airside because of the protests. Hope it is this, not that they plan to fire tear gas into the terminal to disperse.

Most flights departing after 00:00 are still scheduled tonight. So Pax will be trying to arrive at airport 20:30 onwards for these flights.

CX's Late night bank of flights from US/Canada all got off and are on route for arrival 5am onwards tomorrow in HKG. The Midday bank of European flights to HKG is due to start soon. So far CX hasn't cancellled any Europe -> HKG flights that would be due to arrive after 6am tomorrow. Let's see if this changes or if they are delayed.

AA cancelled LAX-HKG moments ago. Should have been on route for early am arrival tomorrow.

If flight and cabin crew are avail then airlines based in HKG will try to operate as scheduled whether passengers are there or not. There’ll still be freight and the pax down route need aircraft to fly back on.

As for non HKG based airlines they’ll either delay the departure until the passengers can get checked in or get their aircraft out of there if again crew are available.

Just saw on Bloomberg the ECONOMIC IMPACT of this is HUGE. If this lasts a long time MNCs (multi-nationals) may move more Asia Pacific HQ to Tokyo or Singapore. This may cause an increase of ultra-long-haul flights from the US to Singapore for example. HK is sad in that its the ONLY place in China with Western style freedoms of internet for example (very important for business, VPNs are annoying and your constantly fighting the Chinese government in Mainland China).

Flights seem to be coming in normally. I don't understand why they do not divert though. It would potentially be a logistically nightmare as crew and connecting passengers stranded at HKG.

UA is not the only one continuing to land their planes. So this is not directed to UA only.

The flight to SYD is showing a time of 10am, MEL 1130am, if SYD gets delayed beyond 12 it will hit the curfew for SYD. VA still has both HKG flights operating tomorrow which means domestic is down to 1 A332 and I expect the knock on effects through VA's network could last a couple of days if not more

Wow. would 77W have enough legs for SIN-SFO direct - or would somebody get offloaded? It isn't exactly the season with strong jetstream either...

SeoulIncheon, east-bound TPAC is easy for the B77W and can easily make SIN-SFO. It's the west-bound sector with headwinds where SQ may need to re-fuel in TPE or HND/NRT to make it to SIN depending on payload.

You read what i was going to say next. You are right VA are in trouble re wide body fleet, although I wonder if they have spare 737s that can take the hit? At least with Qantas they have the option of spare A330s/ 747 to relieve the duties of the AKL A330.

SIN-SFO should be ok. It is about 14.5hr flight time. SFO-SIN is not possible. It will be a very light load as a lot of pax are either SIN-HKG or HKG-SFO only. It probably goes out with around 100 pax.

Not knowing the performance of the 77W TOO WELL. I believe it's not near full anyway since pax and cargo would be loaded and offloaded in HKG haded to SFO anyway.

No need to guess since we have actual data. Here's the data from Sunday's flights:
https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SIA ... /WSSS/KSFO
https://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAL ... /VHHH/KDFW

The difference in distance and time is pretty small.

I wonder if freight is impacted. I think the economy could survive some time without people flying in and out of the territory (as long as there is electronic communication), but stopping the freight would be disasterous for the HK economy.

The free WORLD is WATCHING Hong Kong,

your arrivals and departures.

We are powerless like in a totalitarian country too, on this forum to say anything more than that by an unfree desire for us to simply neutrally just observe a societies aviation unraveling. Such desires are showcasing the best and worse aspects of this forum. We pray in America

your arrivals and departures to Hong Kong continue as scheduled and without interruption now and in the near future, in the interest of mobility and the inalienable right to travel as much as people of this region wish to do so, without arbitrary governmental limitations.

Can we confirm ground stops are NOT just due to unpredictable weather?

With Macau being so close to Hong Kong and it being a tourist mecca with lots of hotels, could airlines (albeit those flying smaller aircraft) not divert there and offload passengers and stay at one of the many hotels or even shuttle them back across to Hong Kong on one of the many ferries that operate 24hrs? And then send the cost of diversion and passenger re-accomodation bill to the HKG Government?

That is the dedicated SIN-SFO flight. This is the SIN-HKG-SFO flight, with full traffic rights on both segments. Many of the people getting on in SFO/SIN are just flying to HKG, not all the way. They will be rebooked rather than placed on the temporary rerouted SIN-SFO nonstop. So loads should be lighter than usual.

Wow. would 77W have enough legs for SIN-SFO direct - or would somebody get offloaded? It isn't exactly the season with strong jetstream either...

SIN-SFO should be ok. It is about 14.5hr flight time. SFO-SIN is not possible. It will be a very light load as a lot of pax are either SIN-HKG or HKG-SFO only. It probably goes out with around 100 pax.

The 77W could certainly fly the SFO-SIN leg. Just look at DFW-HKG west bound.

In regards to the load, I don't know if you are talking in generalities or this particular flight, but when I flew SIN-SFO, it was full, not 100 passengers or so.

My estimate of 100 pax is based on that fact that every time I fly SIN-SFO over HKG, more than half the pax on SFO-HKG fly that leg only. So 100 pax is my estimate for SIN-HKG-SFO all the way only pax on this specific flight only. All SIN-HKG only pax will have been offloaded and HKG-SFO pax will not board. Most people fly direct if they can and don't stop in HKG. Especially the morning flight from SIN-SFO direct has a lot of connecting pax from India.

1. Macau is still another territory with different visa policy and its own immigration control. Some passengers might not be able to enter Macau with whatever travel document they're holding
2. At past, when HKG have to be closed due to impact of e.g. typhoon yet MFM remain available, I remember there were some flights originally using HKG landed at MFM instead, and then wait until the typhoon passed before the aircraft fly across the small ocean to Hong Kong. Passengers were seated within the aircraft throughout the entire time.

The official reason is that the large number of protestors in and around the airport have already caused disruption to the airport operation together with traffic congestion into and out of the airport. If nothing special happens then depends on situation flights will be resumed starting from 6am tomorrow.
