SRQ new service announcement Aug 13

Mon Aug 12, 2019 3:14 pm

My understanding is that this is a press conference. Sometimes routes are not announced with a press conference.
So this must be big !

My guesses:

New airline---Spirit
UA announces IAH
Major expansion by G4

Would this route be better served as SRQ-LGW given its more leisure style?

I’m calling NK- I believe there was a screenshot going around a few weeks ago of SRQ being available for booking on their website.

I don't even know. My comment was more for humor...

I don't think any 787s are based in LGW? Only LHR?

Of my three guesses, that's the one I have the least confidence with. I don't think there would be a press conference for that.

I thought so but couldn't be sure
You are correct though. LGW BA long haul is pretty much exclusively B772.

It’s because UA is stretched thin on planes and doesn’t have an interest in adding additional destinations from IAH.

F9 adding SRQ-DEN nonstop service is a possibility as F9 usually has nonstop service to DEN on at least a seasonal basis from most of its destinations.

Ah yay. I have kept an eye out on Spirit website to see if something else was out there. I would guess Spirit as like 727Lover said there were no press conferences in the terminal for the most recent United and Frontier route announcements and I think couple others in the past. Last press conference was for the Allegiant expansion, correct?

What's the deal with the sudden explosion in growth at SRQ? I mean, the more service the better, but what's driving all this?

I would speculate that all the housing construction going on in the SRQ area combined with plenty of room at SRQ is helping to fuel this expansion. At one point in late 2017 there were lots of empty gates sitting at the end of the concourse, not so much anymore.

SRQ has been vastly underserved since the early 2000's I believe 1994 was the airports busiest year in terms of passengers. MCO, TPA, JAX, MIA, FLL, RSW, all have had steady growth over the past 30-40 years. SRQ is finally catching up. An estimated 2M pax leak to TPA annually. SRQ could be a 3-4M pax a year airport if fully utilized.

G4 usually does announcements on Tuesdays don't they? Hopefully who ever it is they start the new routes in the Nov/Dec time frame.

I would guess a significant G4 expansion. 3 RON aircraft, additional 8-12 routes.

If this is true there will be others on G4. My guesses:

SBN
RFD
IAG
BLV
HTS
SWF

A smattering of G4's most consistently performing small-airport snowbird markets east of the Mississippi.

FWA-SRQ makes all the sense in the world. Back when FL ran IND-SRQ, over 10% of their pax came from FWA’s home turf, and the FWACAA was literally begging FL to enter FWA with SRQ as an initial route. The WN/FL merger killed that, even though the FWACAA was close to a deal with FL.

And IND-SRQ had a very loyal following in Fort Wayne. When FL pulled out of SRQ, I remember a Starbucks barista at their Glenbrook Square Mall location screaming “NOOOOOO!” about the discontinuation. For locals that think PGD is too far - and there are many - an added choice of SRQ without a mad dash down I-69 from a trusted airline with a loyal following will make them very happy.

Also of note; Sometimes, G4 announces two and occasionally three routes at once for their strong cities. G4 continues to gain pax at FWA, and the FWA ops haven’t been hurt by G4’s IND growth. I could see LAS as well thanks to the switch to an all-Airbus fleet that can handle hot and high operations better and more efficiently than the MD-80, which needed all of FWA’s longest runway to make it to LAS. A319s, however, are great for hot and high airports like LAS and could use either FWA pax runway to get to LAS with room to spare.

In addition, Allegiant’s staycation entertainment center Allegiant Nonstop chose Fort Wayne for their third location, proof of Allegiant Travel’s commitment to Fort Wayne. And remember: the goal of Allegiant Nonstop is to fill in the gaps between vacations by air and introduce families to air travel.

FWA is on track for their fourth record year in a row. G4 will be slapping a turbocharger on that growth.

There was demand but with airline consolidations SRQ was forgotten. Since moving to SRQ area at beginning of 2016, I, my partner, family and friends have flown out of TPA or RSW 50-55 round trips that we could have flown out of SRQ.

Ever flown out of TPA? SRQ is a breeze to depart and arrive on a flight. No long taxi times, no crowded auto terminal traffic and not having to be in Tampa.

G4 already flies IND-SRQ, so probably not directly related. Maybe G4 is having a broader route lunch tomorrow that includes both IND and SRQ.

Srq is a place that gets new service at the end of a good economic cycle when everything is already saturated and then an early cut when the economy sinks. So the economy is going south soon. Hoard your assets

The cause for SRQ’s last plunge - and it was huge - wasn’t really related to the economy. It was because of just one thing: the WN/FL merger.

FL was the number one carrier at SRQ. The flights were profitable with a very loyal following (see IND-SRQ mentioned earlier). WN decided to consolidate at TPA as part of merger integration, causing SRQ’s traffic to drop 40% (not as bad as PHF’s 66% drop due to integration favoring RIC and ORF). Some markets, including MDW, still have not regained SRQ service.

G4 has a unique business model, and in the Great Recession, the company grew and was recessionproof. People don’t want to give up vacations, and the G4 model allowed people to keep taking vacations in the toughest of times.

And this is the reason why I was hoping for Spirit. I’m happy that G4 is growing but I was hoping for more diversity in carriers especially before the airport gets full and won’t have favorable slots, and/or next downturn another airline goes.

FNT is holding a press conference tomorrow also announcing a "new destination." With Allegiant's success in Punta Gorda and St. Pete, not sure if SRQ would be over saturate the market, but who knows?

Hard to believe the airport authority might actually need to start thinking about putting terminal expansion in the airport master plan. Is this really SRQ? :o

LOL not yet but I believe around 4 million passengers is the top. I remember reading last year that this year SRQ would be at 50% capacity and that’s around 2 million. Security between 10am and noon at high season last winter was around 15-20 min up to and over 30 minutes. I remember one day it had the longest wait times in the country.

The security line was extended 3 times at beginning of high season.

This is happening because this area from Sarasota/Manatee/Charlotte/Lee & Collier counties are all exploding in growth. I believe all five or at least four of them are in the top 10 nationwide. SRQ has been majorly underserved and overlooked.
For me, it's exactly the same time due to the way the roads are and horrible traffic on University, to use RSW so that is my preferred. This is good to see, but I find myself in the camp, asking if this is G4, are they doing too much, too close with PGD/PIE & now SRQ

G4 will be tapped out at PGD when they open their new resort. They need to expand at a different airport and SRQ fits the bill. Lot's of snowbirds that can now have their choice of airports.

CO also cut SRQ except EWR, which was reduced. They also cut the connection flights. Other carriers cut frequency and/or originations from SRQ, after 2008.

The wait times at lights on University (and other major roads in Sarasota) are way too long. This causes travel delays when you get caught at 3 or 4.

Sarasota could use some transportation engineers to develop a flow pattern to get people up and down university at 50mph from 275 to 41.

Anyway, I wish there was some reasonable connections westward. CO had the ERJ to IAH which 1/2 of the year was perfectly timed for connections from west (both ways). It was always full, and I was hoping UA would add it back with a 70 seater capable of overwater flying so it would cut down block time and fuel use, but so far no dice.

Not strictly an SRQ problem. 3M cut big chunks of flying across Florida, not just SRQ, and the entire industry cut frequency and destinations out of every size airport in the US during the Great Recession. Some cities saw service leave altogether.

As for SRQ: CO’s cutbacks were a drop in the bucket compared to the loss of FL. Same goes for comparing legacy cuts to losing FL at virtually any city that FL served without replacement WN service.

Did G4 get more planes recently to be able to service all these new routes?

They have received several aircraft in recent months.

I believe Allegiant will receive 3 more aircraft this year, reaching a fleet of 93 aircraft. They plan to to grow by 9 aircraft in 2020.

The big change is the increase in block hours this year due to eliminating the MDs last year.

Other routes have been cut back also. It isn't just adds.

If this is true there will be others on G4. My guesses:

SBN
RFD
IAG
BLV
HTS
SWF

A smattering of G4's most consistently performing small-airport snowbird markets east of the Mississippi.

No TYS or AVL or CVG or IND or FWA?

G4 already flies AVL-SRQ, IND-SRQ, and CVG-SRQ.

IND is having a new service announcement tomorrow, also. G4 already serves IND-SRQ, but could we see someone like NK of F9 launch IND-SRQ?

Some 8 new seasonal routes! Congrats SRQ!! But again no real option for anyone in Chicago. For me Bloomington Illinois would have been a jackpot an hour+ away from my home in Plainfield, if anything maybe could have taken the Amtrak from Bloomington but again nope.

Des Moines, Iowa; Flint, Michigan; Fort Wayne, Indiana; Knoxville, Tennessee; Louisville, Kentucky; Rockford, Illinois; St. Louis, Missouri; and South Bend, Indiana.

Thats fantastic news! We vacation from DSM in Siesta Key and while TPA or PIE are fine the commute on some days can be 2hr drive. That coupled with a 7a departure means getting up at 4am with kids and shuttling them up to PIE to make Allegiants scheudle.
