I wonder how they end up with actually putting something that looks like the early 90’s corel draw splash screen on a real airplane. They could hire any kind of contemporary Loewy or even Picasso-level talent for comparably peanuts, but they end up with the intern son of the directoe of a marketing company time and time again.

Why did they do these things so much better before? New public management?

I love it.

It ain't Eurowhite, it's easily identifiable, it'll presumably travel all over the world to be seen.... and it's about the first nice thing/news to come out of Boeing in a half a year.

So what's the plane going to be used for? An airshow demonstrator? I'd have thought that Boeing would have been able to place a 787-9 NTU realitively easily.

Nice livery, and one that highlights a good cause for the local communities.

It's going to be used as a distraction from all the other turbulence currently buffeting the company.

It looks absolutely stunning. The colors, the shades and the engine just come together on this already beautiful aircraft to form something even better. Well done Boeing!!

Why can’t we have some positivity for once instead of trashing everything Boeing does?

What's the purpose of the livery? Is this frame going to do some sort of promotional tour or something like that?

Sorry for the doublepost, but I have a couple of questions I forgot to post before. 1) Is this a HKA NTU or are they taking delivery of it because I've seen both sides of that? 2) Why did they make it? Is it for airshows? Just to show off? I mean regardless it's a stunner but still.

This frame was ordered by GECAS and would have been leased to HKA if thet hadn't pulled out at a late date.

I guess we will hear soon enough what Boeing is planning to do with this airplane. Probably some promotional tour.

Dreams take flight? Someone in Boeings PR dept. is being overly optimistic, though I guess they have to be right now.

I wasn’t hating or trolling. IMHO, I don’t think this is the right moment to come with something like this. And for the livery, I think it’s much better than Boeing has done in the last decade.

This livery acknowledges the employees' effort in helping their local communities. It is extremely appropriate right now as it can help in boosting morale within the workforce.

Dreams take flight refers to the dreams of beneficiaries of the charities that Boeing employees participate in or contribute to in their local communities. And appropriately done up on a Dreamliner. I guess people have to read what is it for before actually commenting.

Presumably in the US ‘taking flight’ doesn’t mean running away, like it does in the rest of the English speaking world ?

OK, I wasn’t aware of that. It should have helped if that information was added earlier.

Agree with you completely. Apart from a few timeless livery, most of the planes these days look bland in mostly white. This looks lovely, just like those special livery of QF, CZ, AM, EY etc.

Agreed.

Only livery that'd make me happier is if QF quit being dumb, and finally put an A380 in Wunala colors before they're gone! :cloudnine:

Well, their A380s are up for refurbishment, first one coming back in next month. Here's hoping one of those 12 birds will wear a special livery.

"Dreams Take Flight" sounds like a Disneyland parade name or fireworks show name. Who is and are the customers and future users of this particular aircraft?

As mentioned before, it's a "white tail". I have to believe that GECAS was released of obligations to take this frame, since Hong Kong Airlines was not able to commence the leasing contract on it.

Great livery but completely ruined by the font they used for the catchline - did they have to use something off the shelf like Arial???

I wonder about that. Surely HKA won’t take this frame, I guess Boeing and GECAS have agreed this frame can be used by Boeing for marketing/publicity purposes for a while, but eventually GECAS will have to find a customer for it. Too bad this fantastic livery will not last that long...
GECAS has another frame destined for HKA (LN911), wonder what will happen with this one. Surely there must be airlines who can use two of these popular aircraft at short term.

Leasing companies, with a few notable exceptions (eg Amadeo A380), don’t get released of their obligation to take an aircraft just because they have no customers. Especially for a popular aircraft like the 787. That is the risk leasing companies assume when ordering aircraft. They signed a contract with Boeing for the aircraft so they are under the same obligations to take it, and same penalties if they don’t, as any other customer.

This marketing (however it is used by Boeing) was no doubt negotiated to be allowed in lieu of penalty payments for deferment or so GECAS didn’t have to take delivery of an asset that won’t immediately be making them money- buying GECAS more time to find another customer to lease the aircraft out to.

Looks terrific! The 787 really lends itself well to some artistic license. Here's hoping that more operators take interest in painting liveries like this from time to time.

The 787-9 is one of the most beautiful aircraft ever made. Perfect proportions and looks good in almost any livery. This particular livery looks stunning.

Do you know if GECAS and/or Boeing has found a different customer for LN911, or will it also be a whitetail.

We know that the Dreams take flight was supposed to go to HKA. The banner on the aircraft with the line number and customer during final assembly did say it was the 1st to HKA. This was seen on several pictures of the frame when it was still inside on the assembly line. I haven't seen any in assembly pictures of LN911 yet, so we can't tell by the banner where it is supposed to go. We will know it's another white tail if it's again HKA.

Don't believe everything you read on blog sites...

No banner on 911 (ZE171), it's a white tail.

The poduction status differs depending on which system you look at. On the master spreadsheet ZE170-4 are sitll showing GECAS > HAINAN AIRLINES HOLDING CO LTD. On the other system which shows the individual airframe specs, ZE170 has now changed to BOEING COMPANY then BOEING CAPITAL CORP. The latter is usually the more up-to-date. ZE171+ not showing anything useful yet and still no reg allocations for the other frames. Given that this is a GECAS order, the internal change to Boeing Capital Corp (basically Boeing's own finance house) is interesting. I wouldn't write it off as being not taken up just yet as Hainan group have been tardy at taking their 787s for the past year or so with them parked up for months. It could just be that all parties have come to an arrangement for Boeing to use it for marketing/whatever in the interim.
