Why did DL 122, BOS-EDI, just divert to PWM? (First DL 757 at PWM since 1996)

Sun Aug 18, 2019 3:16 am

Anybody have any info as to why DL 122 BOS-EDI, has just diverted to PWM?

This is not a typical diversion. This is the first time a DL 757 has been to PWM since 1996. PWM is only 90 miles from BOS. Most diversions would return, or go to BGR. I've never seen a scheduled transatlantic diversion come to PWM!

Mechanical issue.

Weird... also surprised they did not go back to Boston.

It mist have been something very critical that required landing at the nearest airport. I remember around 2006 a Delta 767 landed at LNK, an airport they didn't serve because of a "metal on chip" warning.

The band of storms that rolled through in that time period might be a possible explanation of why.

A look on FR24 shows it made a very quick descent and immediately landed about 15-20 minutes after turning to divert.

Been a tough week for this route. Thursday’s DL 123 (EDI-BOS) cancelled and now this diversion which has turned into a cancellation also.

Since PWM has no TATL flights to rebook passengers on I wonder what happened to the passengers. Were they bussed back to BOS?

A replacement 757 (9970) is expected to come up from JFK but hasn’t yet departed, according to FlightAware.

Assuming technical, these ageing 757s really starting to impact on reliability. Haven't there already been various delays and cancellations on these 757 routes this summer? Pax may choose alternatives in the future.

I’ve been on several DL757s, including the 75S that flies DCA-LAX-DCA several times, and haven’t experienced a single mechanical delay. I’ve fly 60-70 segments a year on DL and can’t think of the last time a 757 had a mechanical delay on a segment I was on.

N712TW was delivered new to TWA on 6/97. Maybe I’m just getting old, but that’s too really that old.

The 757’s have some of the highest dispatch reliability in the Delta fleet. I am not sure where you are receiving the information on maintenance metrics and dispatch reliability, but, you are wrong.

The reliability has more to do with the maintenance intervals than the overall age of the airplane. In the summer the schedule and tempo pushes airplanes to their max utilization and min MX 'hand time'. You suffer alot of MX failures as a result.

In the winter months mx can focus on preventive mx which helps ALOT.

I think United’s 757s out of EDI have much worse reliability issues than DL’s.

I found the ATC recordings and they came in as an emergency and a compressor stall was mentioned.

A compressor stall would indicate a possible inflight shutdown. This is a land at nearest suitable condition, and get the airplane on the ground ASAP. This would be a situation where you find the nearest airport and land there, regardless of MX or ability to rebook passengers. PWM makes perfect sense here given where the Europe flights typically fly.

DL9894 (N717TW) just departed PWM for EDI.

I would echo OP — I have never seen a scheduled transatlantic flight make a diversion to PWM, either. Funny enough, just the other day I was pondering — having seen a number of TATL biz jets and B6 A321s on ferry flights from Europe at PWM but never a TATL commercial flight — what the absolute worst case scenario would have to be for a transatlantic flight to have to land at PWM or BXM (fully recognizing that while the latter has the runway length it has no CBP or infrastructure to deal with a transatlantic diversion, so pretty much 0 in terms of odds anyway). I guess we got our answer, at least for the former airport.

It's been a tough weekend for Delta. Cancelled this flight Thursday, diverted today, diverted an Airbus in Caribbean due to in-flight engine failure yesterday, and smashed a 757 into a runway so hard today it bent the plane. They need to get things under control.

Hmmm...

No complaints about the aging:

77E's
A320's (oldest from 1990)
A319's
738's

Jesus Christ, from reading this website it feels like 757's and 767's are the only types that ever show wear once they hit 15-20.

Got any data - say a year's worth - for aircraft tech diversions across carriers? Analysis by anecdote is for children.

Speaking of DL 757's, looks like they just wrecked one during a hard landing in Portugal, some nice creases in that metal.
