Updated: UA Announcing CUR, NCE and PMO and expanding some existing routes

Wed Aug 21, 2019 3:05 pm

UA's social media team is teasing what appears to be some route announcements tomorrow at 10 a.m. CDT. The footage in the video appears to indicate additions at SFO, DEN, ORD, and EWR:

Round the world they go. Where will they land? Only our Network Planning team knows…

Interesting thing I saw was at the end there was 7 paper planes so maybe 7 new routes?

I'd imagine these would be international routes, no need to make a big deal out of new domestic additions. I'm really interested to see what they add from DEN.

Was just about to post this. Must be a pretty decent expansion from ORD, most likely in “retaliation” due to the latest AA news.

UA could add SFO-BUF, SFO-CLT, SFO-DSM, SFO-ELP, SFO-LIT, SFO-MEM, SFO-MKE, SFO-ORF, SFO-RIC, and SFO-TUL nonstop service as BUF, CLT, DSM, ELP, LIT, MEM, MKE, ORF, RIC, and TUL are some of the top domestic destinations traveled to from the San Francisco Bay Area that aren't currently served nonstop from SFO.

They could add ORD-GUA/SAL on a weekly basis on Saturdays. I’m guessing it’ll be more focused on Europe/Asia, though.

Assuming these are adds for next summer's long haul schedule, I'll throw out a few guesses:
SFO-DUB (789)
SFO-FCO (772)
DEN-CDG (788)
ORD-DUS (763)
ORD-TLV (772)
EWR-SVQ (752)
EWR-PMO (763)
This is my signature until I think of a better one.

Doubt it.

UA hasnt launched a new route (domestic or international) from IAH in three years which was IAH-CAK. Given that, any optimism Ive had that IAH will get new routes from UA has been ground into dust. Id love to be proven wrong, but I dont think I am. UA has launched new routes from every other hub in that time frame. Were literally last in line.

The truth of the matter seems to be that IAH has been relegated to Latin America for any expansion opportunities and there arent really any on the horizon. The problem with that is that Latin America is very hot and cold as a market.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned DEN-MUC on UA metal. I would be surprised if it was CDG/AMS.

DEN-MUC would be a good add, but LH just recently re-entered the market. I think it would be too much capacity for UA to join them on the route.

Might just be DEL-LHR going year round. UA has been looking for a winter slot for the route.

We’ll see. Last hear they hyped DEN getting a new Euro destination only to see it be FRA on UA metal (which was needed).

As noted, it's simply a slot issue. UA has expressed desire to fly the route year-round. They're not willing to reduce their other winter LHR routes to cover it however.

Yeah I did mean DEN thanks for catching that :)

UA has said they would like to make it year round but until they get a slot at LHR not much UA can do.

I hope it's not DEN-MUC, im hoping more for DEN-CDG or AMS, with AMS being the front runner. DUB is a distant black horse.

Perhpas we'll finally see EWR-ICN?

IAH-JNB would be the same distance as PER-LHR and DOH-AKL, slightly over 9000sm. If JNB is one of the routes, EWR makes a lot more sense. Even IAD would make more sense. Both of those would be over 1000 miles shorter than IAH-JNB and have a larger local market. Even ORD-JNB is 300 miles shorter than IAH-JNB.

What we do know is that among the US3, UA is the MOST AGGRESSIVE in starting new routes and starting new markets. Maybe the EWR-BLR (Bangalore, India) route will come true!? No competition either. As much as I would love EWR-ICN, it has the DL/KE monopoly on 2x A380's and their partner OZ 1x A380. SFO-BKK is too low yielding (would passengers pay a premium for a non-stop unlike SIN!?). As much as I would LOVE IAD-PVG, there are China slot problems and UA already up-gauged the EWR-PVG flight to a 77W next quarter.

I'm curious, how constrained is DEN currently as far as international gates goes?

It would be hard for me to imagine a route from DEN to a secondary city in Europe like DUB. LHR going year round (assuming they found the slots) would make most sense.

International gates are crowded during the peak European arrival times. DIA is currently building 12 new gates on concourse A. This will result in six additional wide body international gates.

Right, I know about the expansion. I'm was more curious about the current state since this/these routes will start at least a year before the new gates are done.

Been hearing lots of rumors about ORD-KEF. Wouldn't surprise me for a seasonal summer B752 route, they've thus far been pretty happy with EWR-KEF.

Probably all the HND flights.
With the Europe economy in trouble, hard to see new routes.
Interesting would be SFO-SGN with all the businesses relocating to Vietnam plus an up and coming tourist destination.
