Air Dolomiti to double fleet size

Thu Aug 22, 2019 7:28 pm

Air Dolomiti plans to double its fleet from 14 to 26 Embraer E195ss by 2023. In the future the carrier plans to operate all of LH flights to Italy both from MUC and FRA.

Your thoughts? Interesting considering the recent losses from the LH group and their growth now aimed mainly at expanding their LCC unit (EW).

It’s a bit like air nostrum operating the CRX to Frankfurt from Madrid - cutting the costs of transfer pax.

The E195 seems quite small to handle all Lufthansa flights to Italy. Don't they operate larger a/c to Rome or Milan right now?
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!

Yes, even Venice gets the A320 while Rome is usually on the A321. I don't think they can just reduce FRA-FCO to E95s, it would be a massive drop unless they plan on doubling the number of flights they currently operate.

The plan to make Air Dolomiti the sole operator for LHs MUC/FRA ops to Italy will be later in the future past 2023 I think as this small detail is in the last sentence of the article. That could possible mean though that the LH group could be thinking about transferring some 320s to them at a later point (not announced yet) or another aircraft type. Question is does it make sense for pilots to train on the E195s and then have to do a completely different training on an A320?

Sounds like a cost cutting measure only, like Ryanair does with Ryanair Sun and Malta Air.

MXP, FCO, OLB, PMO and CTA are operated by Airbus' from both FRA and MUC, while VCE, BLQ and GOA are operated by Airbus' from FRA only. Some of them are seasonal flights once a week, they could be upgraded to twice weekly on an E195, but I agree with you. The E195s on all LH flights to Italy is too small, unless they add more flights.
Types flown: A319, A320, A32N, A321, A332, A333, A343, AT43, AT75, AT76, B717, B732, B735, B736, B737, B738, B752, B753, CRJ9, DC10, DH4D, DHC3, E135, E145, E175, E190, E195, F100, MD11, MD81, MD82, MD87, RJ1H

Yeah unless they're losing a ton of money (which I doubt) or are planning to use up tons of slots for these flights (which I also doubt) I guess they may just contract them out. The way the article is written doesn't make it clear wether or not it's gonna be Air Dolomiti E195s operating the flights or if LH is gonna pull something like what they did with the Cityline A340s or Swiss with the 777s they initially had to their subsidiary (whose name I forget)

Don't they mean that instead of flying wetlease for LH they will manage their flights between Italy and Germany? That's how I read it. Air Dolomiti would have to fly a lot of frequencies to MXP and FCO if they had to replace all LH flights.

As stated in the article this are no news and it was already planned last year. I also think the article is a bit misleading with respect to the "14 E195 type aircraft". It was planned that they were getting 5 E195 and 9 E190 from CL.

Here are two German sources:

With respect to the 14 aircraft: http://www.airliners.de/diese-jets-luft ... line/46987

With respect to the shift in EN's strategy: http://www.airliners.de/lufthansa-air-d ... otte/46945

It's not really doubling the fleet size since all the E190/5s are coming from LH CityLine anyway - and the vast majority of bookings are still taken through the LH website and not their own

Yes, but maybe it is all about offering an established brand and tailored product for a certain market with the possibility of doing that with even lower costs.

This is getting a bit off topic, but in case someone is wondering about the replacement of the Embraers at CL, they are getting 6 A319 from LH.

Italians are somehow conservatives and like the Italian feeling when interacting with companies. Also, foreigner have a positive perception of travels to Italy. By using Air Dolomiti, I see both positive effect on accounting and travellers experience.
