WN 711 today 8/22/19 from Reno to Las Vegas diverted to Laughin (KIFP)

Thu Aug 22, 2019 8:53 pm

Southwest 711 from Reno to Las Vegas diverted to Laughlin today. Does anyone know why? It looks like Las Vegas has good weather today. Mechanical or medical issues could be ruled out as Las Vegas would be a much better place to be for either of those.

ATC? Appeared to circle before diverting.

Very odd...and they were barely on the ground an hour in IFP.

Looks like the airport was changing runway configurations and they don’t have the fuel to hold.

Which makes sense. LAS has good weather and runways pointing in all directions, so it’s rarely necessary to carry an alternate. Moreover, there’s less margin for error on shorter flights because the expected fuel burn is pretty much known. I had a similar diversion to IND on BNA-MDW once when MDW had some sort of incident close the airfield for 15 minutes. With IND being an online station and the situation resolved at MDW by the time we landed there, we were in the ground less than half an hour (I think maybe less than 20 minutes).

Not to bring this into a tangent, but what determines extra fuel? I've seen some planes hold for over an hour, on domestic segments and this flight for example, if it was a fuel and go, barely could hold for say 20 minutes.

Depends what the dispatcher plans and the captain agrees to carry.... you must always have fuel to get to the destination plus an extra 45 minutes and enough fuel to get to an alternate if required. That's bare minimum for Domestic 121. On a good weather day, I would say most airlines strive to carry the minimum which is usually somewhere around one hours worth of fuel.
