South Africa impounds Air Tanzania A220

Do we know anything? I mean it's a pretty serious move to impound an aircraft, so I'm wondering what the reason is behind it. The article I linked doesn't say much...

These might shine some more light on the topic

That's what happens when you don't pay the loan, like a car, it gets repossessed.

But the A220 is not owned by Air Tanzania. It is owned by the state own leasing company.

This is obviously a tactical move by SAA, the airline is bankrupt and it's trying to get any money that's owed to them refunded. Although the money owed by Air Tanzania seems alot it's just penny's compared to how much SAA are in debt but it all helps in trying to regain the finances of the failing national carrier.

I'm very surprised though that the Tanzanian Government hadn't seen this coming and that they hadn't already repaid the money owed to SAA which was part of the short-lived partnership between the two airline's.

The article says the monies owed are to a retired farmer, said the aircraft was impounded because Tanzania's government had not paid him $33m (£28.8m) it owes in compensation.Lawyer Roger Wakefield told the BBC the money was awarded after Tanzania's government seized lands belonging to the South African farmer.

No, it is an obvious result of John Magufuli's ridiculous policy of kicking out foreign creditors from Tanzania and refusing to pay them. It is the same reason why first the Q400s and then the A220s were held back by Canadian courts, and why the 787 has been doing domestic shuttle runs to Arusha.

Because the story with SAA just did not fit. Now, thew new story fits, the jet is owned by the state and not by Tanzania air. The compensation has to be paid by the Tanzanian government, so the owner of the jet.

Interesting reading all the jumped to conclusions as to why the aircraft was impounded, read the headline, don't bother with the actual story.

The 787 seems to spend the majority of it's time shuttling between DAR and BOM, so not too many problems flying it to India. This claim goes back decades, maybe Tanzania are hoping this elderly former land owner and farmer is just going to quietly move on and not worry about his $30 million, apparently not. So do they want their shiny new toy back, or does the former farmer get a new toy ?

If the S.Africa courts force a sale of the plane to settle the debt I wonder what the implications would be?
