Inconsistent Livery Font Kerning

Sun Aug 25, 2019 7:22 am

Is it just me or do you also notice that the kernings (distances between characters) are not consistent? The distances between characters in the words "Airlines" and "Cargo" are larger than the ones in "Singapore". How can this happen to an airline such as Singapore Airlines?

Isn't this similar across all their other freighters as well?

For some reason the typography (AIRLINES CARGO) has been applied incorrectly on that particular aircraft. The letter tracking on that part seems to be bigger - tracking being the uniform spacing between characters. I've had a look and other aircraft don't seem to have the same issue.

By the way, kerning isn't meant to be consistent spacing - it's meant to be the visually pleasing spacing of letters. In practice this means very inconsistent spacing in the pursuit of making it look good and well proportioned. Also, the spaces between letters are just called spaces, not kernings.

One service SIA offers is transporting automobiles and they want to emphasize that your C A R can G O in that airplane.
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
The heart has its beaches, its homeland and thoughts of its own
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
The heart has its seasons, its evenings and songs of its own

You're right. In this case, the inconsistent spacing make it visually unpleasing. :)

Is it possible there are certain things on the plane that prevent painting that particular area? For example, I was told Thai had to put their logo further back on their new planes due to doors/windows.

Shouldn't really be a problem on a purpose-built cargo aircraft like this. In fact, you'd think it would gave been better if the O in CARGO wasn't over the rear cargo hatch.
