FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

As always, GREAT report. Thanks!

Two questions:
1. Is Guam part of this report, whenever there are changes?
2. How long does it take you on an average Sunday to put this report together?

Again, thanks for all your work!!!

Surprised to see WN adding a third ABQ-LAX on Nov. 4 but very glad to see it. Could be that AA and DL both have 3 per day now. Thanks Enilria!

Interesting to see what cities get extra love from WN. Some unexpected like ABQ and IND.

Nice to see these additions from last year start a bit earlier.

Are they reducing frequency before the cut on the 28th?

EWR was slated from the announcement to end Nov 3rd.
BOI-RNO on AS goes from early AM from RNO/late return to noonish turn soon and amazed they actually still do it at all.
Nice to see 3 BOI-DFW next May, but probably all 175s.....

That’s a good question. I believe GUM is included. I require one of the two cities in the route to be USA. How each airport is classified happens before I receive the data, but I believe possessions and territories are considered USA.

It’s a 2hr project, although it varies depending on the volume of changes.

The reason I was asking about Guam, was supposedly UA is moving up the drop date of Guam-HKG to October 14th, and it did not show up in this report. I was just curious.

Again, thanks.

WN revised their schedule between November 3-20.

PVD gained 5 weekday departures from what was previously for sale. 1 each to BWI MDW FLL MCO TPA.

As I mentioned when SY dropped PVD-PUJ a few weeks ago, PUJ demand from the northeast has taken a giant hit from the negative publicity regarding the mysterious illnesses and deaths.

With AA adding flights to NAS from BOS, BOS-NAS will have a large increase in seats for this winter.

Is the PUJ reduction related to the recent problems in DR? They were very loud about the increase in service to PUJ when they announced MIA from BOS.

4 airlines were overkill for BOS-RDU, not surprised to see them abandon the route. How are their other routes doing from BOS?

UA MIA-SFO NOV 0.9>0[1.0]

Does this mean that it's gone through the winter season? Why can't UA sustain a single daily SFO-MIA Flight?

B6 FLL-JAX NOV 3>4[3]

It looks like B6 is ending HDN early. Frankly I’m surprised that market even came back given the relatively low load factors.

Nice to see FLL markets picking up some frequencies. B6 is wasting no time backfilling some of the FLL-JAX capacity being pulled by WN and NK.

It’s interesting that the MAX cuts have only been done through November, but not December. I am guessing those are still a work in progress or WN knows something we don’t about return to service.

My LAX-TPA on 12/27 was zeroed out last week then all of a sudden was back with availability for 8 this week.

Right -- it appears what Southwest largely did was take their Thanksgiving schedule (11/20 - 12/2) and push it backwards to 11/2. The typical Thanksgiving schedule cuts boosts certain frequencies (BWI and Florida see some ups, among others) and cuts back certain routes with lower demand during an extended holiday period. There are more out there than got picked up for whatever reason (MidwestIndy found and shared a whole bunch in this thread viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1412069&p=21605621&hilit=mke#p21605621), but it appears they come from pushing the holiday schedule backwards to early November from the original 11/20 start date. That's why there are so many fractional changes. DAL-iND is normally a 1x on weekdays (plus a 2nd trip some weekend days) was bumping up to 2x daily during the Thanksgiving schedule 11/20. But now that's starting sooner for a net gain this week of 0.4. Lots of fractional stuff like this.

I wonder what led them to do this. They've had a 10-15 day Thanksgiving schedule for a number of years and it made sense to me that business travel probably sags but certain leisure/VFR routes get a boost. But in the first couple weeks of November I wouldn't think that would be happening yet. The first couple weeks of November seem to be as business-heavy as anything in October, but some business markets really take it on the chin -- a notable one is DAL-SAT

Weekdays DAL-SAT October through 11/1
600
705
820
925
1155
1415
1605
1705
1805
2010

Weekdays DAL-SAT starting 11/4 now showing the "Thanksgiving" schedule which had only been effective starting 11/20
600
720
1005
1430
1725
1920
2245

Only 7 DAL-SAT on weekdays (6 if you consider that 10:45pm departure not very business-useful) might make sense the week of Thanksgiving but seems awfully lean for the entire month. The mid-day gaps are pretty incredible on a route like this, especially if one considers what happens if that lone 2:30pm flight sells out or cancels. Come Tuesday, December 3rd DAL-SAT is back to 10x.

Very substantial increases from Delta this week. There are about 42 routes showing increases (when looking at the first month of changes) while 9 show decreases (PUJ makes up 4 of them with decreases from ATL, BOS, DTW, JFK).

Where is Delta getting the planes from to show all of these increases?

Or will we see a similar amount of cuts next week?

And Enilria, thanks again for assembling this data each week!

I presume DL has excess capacity outside the Summer peaks. I thought it was very interesting DL cut PUJ flying, but added SDQ flying. That makes limited sense, although I suppose the ethnic market is less impacted. Also, a lot of love for SJU. Good to see a comeback. Seems like one Caribbean resort is always having an off year because of something.

AA starts DFW-STS nonstop I checked AA.com and it shows EMB-175. I thought A319 but isn't. E175 is too small jet for long haul trip 3 and a half hours. Ugh! LOL

Sun Country has flown for 737-800 MSP-STS.

AA started DFW/LAX-STS about four months ago.

Air Canada has an E-175 flight from YUL to DFW which is roughly the same length.

United has a MSN-SFO flight that can reach around 4 hours in flight time.

And... I'd take a 2-2 Economy over a 3-3 A319...

What exactly is better about the product on the 319? Certainly the E75 is far better personal space-wise.

It's for another thread, but how do you proposes UA use its limited SNA slots to increase profitability? Please show your work - competitors and frequencies on your proposed routes and alternate routes (like IAH/HOU), with avg fare data from the T-100s.

Is United making this year-round? Interesting to see April and May additions.

NK and F9 are now both on this route as is WN on weekends during winter. I think B6 may still run a daily flight also. Seems over-saturated.

Looks like they just loaded that same schedule for December, at least for EWR. It’s gone from their site. It’ll show next week I’d assume, or it might have been in last week and I didn’t notice.

You know a route is doing pretty poorly when half of the schedules are cut the month before!

Perhaps. I checked and it is loaded for 2020. Some people claimed it wouldn’t be. So that’s a good sign.

So they initially loaded STS as seasonal? That’s odd. I guess they were only going for wine tourism? And realized people live there? Lol. I wonder if there was an incentive and they only loaded it for the incentive period until it proved out.

Does this mean that it's gone through the winter season? Why can't UA sustain a single daily SFO-MIA Flight?

Yeah, it was. LAX-STS began May 3rd and DFW-STS June 6. We may never know the reason why.

Anyways, here's the PR: http://news.aa.com/news/news-details/20 ... fault.aspx

Looks like this is just an extension of what they're flying now. In fact, one of the mainline frequencies is being downgauged to a CR9 starting in January through the months noted in the report. I'll be curious to see what they do with LIT once the MD88s are gone....they've been seeing them regularly for quite a long time.

I think SJC-IAH is only 1x daily. Even more pathetic.

Almost certainly seasonal. I’ve noticed a lot more of seasonal reductions to hubs like on UA and AA to ORD. Remember when it was 3-5 flights a day, year round? I’m guessing that with more hubs and more point to point routes, the hubs don’t see as much traffic as in the “old days”.

UA is simply delaying the restart from end of October to December.

Not surprised at all the cuts to PUJ. I know many people who strongly reconsiders (or avoided booking new ones) their trips to the DR this summer with all the random deaths that were a major topic of the news. Give it six months and people will forget it all happened.

Interesting to see that AS is reported with ~35 changes in this report and just about all of them are for January; I guess the Nov 5 schedule is pretty well set (at least for a while.)

Oh and BTW, I have a small bone to pick with AS route planning for which I'm sure I'll be flamed.

I'll start by congratulating AS on FINALLY making SAN-MCO a daily flight (in January!!!) The flight began in fall of 2012 and has op'd 5 days/wk ever since - X23. (On a few holiday periods the flight has run daily for a week or 2.) They have had competition on the route for about 6 of those 7 years, primarily from WN, and F9.

For the entire summer season of 2019, and on to the end of this year, AS essentially had the route all to themselves -- WN xld their flight completely -- except for a F9 redeye flight which may or may not be op'ing daily and which, by definition of it being a Frontier flight, might stop at any time. But did AS tweak a few things to make their flight Daily when WN was missing from the market? Nope.

And now, WN's latest sked release for Jan 2020 shows the return of Daily SAN-MCO service. Naturally, that's when AS makes their move and (FINALLY) upgrades their nonstop to Daily!

I know there's seasonality and yields and the MAX groundings, yadda yadda yadda. But still, I think AS missed an opportunity there. Bottom line: thank you AS Network Planners for the long overdue upgrade in service from one of your focus cities!

AM reducing MEX-JFK and MEX-LAX that much? Unless AM plans to go all wide-body on JFK and LAX (currently AM408/9 is a B789) or DL plans to up-gauge to a wide-body, this is puzzling, especially with both JFK and MEX as slot restricted, although on select dates, AM will have a spare B788 that formerly flew to PVG.

As for EWR, is WN extending service with reductions there as opposed to a complete pullout?

YEAP, very HARD to believe...

I think some AM B737-700s will be grounded and returned to lessors as well some B737-800s going into MX, in the meantime seems 2 spare ex. Jet Airways will be arriving to the fleet, maybe in time to increase and go to more flights in NOV thru JAN.

WN is still planning on dropping any routes out of EWR that are still showing up in its flight schedules past November 2nd as it had already stated that it will be ceasing operations out of EWR after November 2nd (Source: https://www.swamedia.com/releases/release-424146113c6f2a2eebe84fb61d59a4ff-southwest-reports-record-second-quarter-revenues-and-earnings-per-share).

WN also hasn't yet completed the removal of the 737 MAX from its flight schedules, and WN is scheduled to have the 737 MAX's removed from its flight schedules on September 12th.

PUJ airport is basically a tourist airport, depend 100% of the tourist activities, SDQ airport only 16% of its trafic came from tourism,

Like I said, the SDQ market is less impacted than PUJ by lost tourism so they added SDQ flying. You are agreeing?

Depends on day of the week. Some days are 2x and others 3x ATL-SNA.
