El Al B744 retirement

Mon Aug 26, 2019 1:51 pm

Any information about when the final El Al B744 flight will be? I have enjoyed seeing their jumbos here at JFK since the 70s. The smaller Dreamliner is nothing exciting to see land or taxi and friends avoid it as the blue tinted windows are a nuisance and the Economy seats are cramped. I had hoped they would order a few B748s but they are very costly to fly and maintain. So long jumbos !

As best I can tell, the last El Al 747 out of JFK is September 9, LY4.
There's also a flight from BCN to TLV on a 744 the day before.
I do see that they're continuing ops to BKK after that point, at least through October. And then I see BKK with a 787 in November.
So it looks like they've whittled it down to two primary routes, JFK and BKK, and as additional 787s arrive, BKK will be the last to go.

I much prefer a 747 myself, but these birds are old, and it's time.
And I agree- if anybody could fill a 748i, it'd be El Al from TLV to JFK!
And it would look so great in their refreshed livery.

But that would be way too heavy for LY. The B78X in J-W-Y+-Y could do much better. I'm actually surprised that LY has not agreed to lease four examples from ALC. This would definitely be 95-100 percent capacity on most flights to and from JFK and BKK.

The last 747-400 flight with LY will take place somewhen in the last week of October, once the jewish holiday season ends and the international winter schedule becomes effective.
