Frontier F9 Announces 15 destinations from EWR

Tue Aug 27, 2019 3:49 pm

Just received a marketing e-mail from F9 that they're launching service to 15 destinations from Newark, starting Spring/Summer 2020, likely to capitalize on WN's departure. They listed some teaser fares beginning at $15 one way.

Destinations are Chicago, Denver, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Ontario, Dallas/FW, Atlanta, Raleigh/Durham, Orlando, West Palm, Miami, Tampa, Cancun, San Juan, and Punta Cana.

It'll be interesting to see how UA responds and whether F9 can make it stick.

It’s an aggressive expansion, and it start in November, not spring.

November 14th: 2x daily to MIA, 2x MCO, 1x LAS, 1x SJU

December 10th: 1x daily each to PHX, ATL, PBI.

The rest will come in spring with schedules TBA.

Is there any talk of slots being re-implemented at EWR?

F9 will have to use some creative scheduling for CUN and PUJ to find times when there are FIS gates available.

IMHO, PUJ and ONT look a little iffy but F9's CASM advantage should save them on the rest.

Frontier is like a hoodwinking carnival barker who grabs what he can at one stop before packing up and going to the next town.

I wonder how big a negative impact this will have on their TTN operation.
I don't think UA has that much to worry about though I'm sure they'll keep close tabs on this new interloper into their domain.
I am curious how NK may respond. A few of these routes overlap theirs and NK has at least one NS to/from the DR. Maybe they'll add some more int'l service? Is the FIS facility a 24 hour operation at EWR? Maybe it can become one!

Wow, F9 has never served EWR and they enter in a big way. Too bad it took losing WN to bring in F9, waiting to see what B6 and NK announce.

Hopefully this doesn’t hurt their TTN operation too much, reminds me of PHL where F9 and NK have grown aggressively in the wake of WN’s reductions.

Expansion at PHL hasn’t hurtF9s operation at TTN, nor has PHL hurt NK’s ACY operation. NK’s EWR operation also competes with ACY.

Pacific Western had an operation from EWR to COS. When Frontier took them over, didn't they continue serving EWR for at least a little while before moving to LGA?

I don’t think so, I remember seeing those Western Pacific SIMPSONS 737 at EWR.

Frontiers operational reliability and customer service is already lacking... my thoughts go out to anyone flying F9 in/out of EWR. The ATC delays alone are going to cause quite the problems for them I think.

Demand NYC-CHI/DEN/LAS/PHX/DFW/MCO/MIA/TPA is large and should be very elastic. They can leave the nowhere-to-nowhere stuff (oh, like CVG-JAX) to others - and have to, if they want to fill 320/321s.

Why doesn't F9 expand more into the Caribbean from MIA? I know AA has their big hub there but still. Why no more expansion from MIA to the Caribbean?

I've never seen such spectacular meltdowns like F9 meltdowns. I'm talking lines of passengers running the ENTIRE length of a airport to their ticket counters after they drop a huge live cancellation package down on them. Its actually kind of entertaining to watch and I just think, well thats what happens when you want a 20 dollar ticket.

I assume their theory was go all in to get all of WN's gates (3 I think) as opposed to starting slow and getting stuck with less.

Looking at the times of those flights I wonder if they got a good deal to use international gates outside of peak times (at BOS they use Terminal E but have to be done by noon) All those these departures shown are before 1400 and arrive back after 2100.

this doesn't seem to require 3 gates. Although it's quite possible they've taken all the "slots" that WN abandoned.

Looks like B6 might have squandered their chance at EWR.

Yes, but because there is a hub carrier on one or both ends of each of the routes, the stimulated passengers are much more likely to utilize the hub carrier since they are likely aligned with their loyalty program. Not to mention we are likely to see additional capacity coming from the hub carriers that will make it more difficult for F9, as the network carriers can live off of connections.

Legacies don't usually react too much to stuff like this from F9, there are a few exceptions like AA in CLT and sometimes PHL where AA responds heavily. However, given the size of the NYC metro and demand on most of these routes being enormous, I don't think the legacies will blink an eye on this one except for maybe UA.

I doubt it. They were probably happy with what they have. It’s not like this was a sneak attack on spirit or JetBlue. Maybe they just don’t want more gates at ewr?

WN operates about 18 daily flights, when F9 adds in ATL, DFW, ORD, DEN, ONT, RDU, PUJ, CUN that also gets them to 18 daily flights ( as long as there are no seasonal routes).

Many of these will be operated by their A321s, which means F9 should be bringing more traffic compared
To WN.

IM not sure why everyone is assuming they got the gates wn is vacating. I doubt B6 would cede gates away in a market they are trying to grow. F9 always is nimble to makes route announcements as if it’s more of intent than anything. Lots of these aren’t daily and the ones that are are mostly 1 a day so they may just be able to only need maybe one more gate they can share with spirit or allegiant with their short turn times. B6 on the other hand plans more strategically and takes their time to secure gates for long term, completely antithetical to F9. Plus F9 expansion in big legacy hubs have a history of being short lived. I would stay tuned on B6 ewr ambitions.
I think the delay with B6 is what they are trying to do with less than planned aircraft deliveries this year with airbus dropping the ball on their delivery schedule.

If it fails it fails, but from my understanding F9 has been doing quite well recently.

None of these flights are from 1400-2100... to me that's a glaring indication of the type of gates (international) they are using...

I know that EWR-ONT is a long route. I have to wonder if F9 will also do EWR-OAK? They're basically replacing WN at EWR...and this is more significant than the rump operation F9 has at LGA.

It would seem possible but they don't serve OAK at all. Perhaps they feel between WN, NK and G4 they feel there isn't a space for them.
