What's going on at Samaritan's Purse? Another DC8?

Wed Sep 04, 2019 12:00 am

Many of you know that the organization already owns a DC8-72 Combi. There was an Instagram post that confirmed a rumour that a DC8-73F, owned by SkyBus jet cargo, was brought to GSO for them to look at.

1) who's SkyBus jet cargo
2) did the purchase another DC8?
3) do they need another DC8? They already own a DC3TP and various smaller aircraft

Skybus was/is a Peruvian carrier with an office in the US that rehabbed an ex-DHL (or AStar Air Cargo) DC8 and tried to make a go of it doing cargo runs to/from US and otherwise. I remember that they had the opportunity to fly a particular donor's cargo from TPA to SJU after the hurricane and they couldn't manage to get the jet to TPA. I think they also had a thisclose takeoff incident somewhere.

But there was a pretty-cool video of them pulling the DC8 out of mothballs at like ROW or MZJ and rehabbing it before flying it South. There's a thread all about it a couple of years ago on here.

The Plane Spotting CLT FB page has a pic of both DC-8s side by side. Below is the link if it will load. The page is not open to the public. Credit to the FB poster.

For non experts but enthusiasts: can some compare to compare the consumption for such DC 8 and a moder cargo like A330 orB777 on... Let s say 2500nm and 5000nm route? (both in amount of fuel and $$$)

My quick read of this is that they are buying the plane for spare parts and the engines. It is pretty well known that Delta is doing the same thing with the MD-90s, So you can imagine how hard it is to get parts for a DC-8 now.

I heard they had plenty of parts and just wanted more airlift capacity

The very low cycle rate of an operation like this means acquisition costs are more important than operating costs. Even a parts donor plane isn’t going to cost them very much.

Thanks for the added info!

When I wrote I was puerly curious about the consumption to better understand what are the real number since they are numbers I am totall not aware of!
